Have a Happy, Healthy Halloween!
There are many ideas out there for how to make Halloween, associated with lots of candy and treats, a bit healthier while still keeping it fun. Here we've pooled some of these for you so you can make healthier choices on the big day. Even relatively healthy snacks can be packaged individually in orange and black to make them fun:
- peanuts with shells
- wrapped cheese and crackers
- popcorn (or kettle corn)
- applesauce cups
- sugar free gum
- roasted pumpkin seeds
- low-sugar candy apples
- little boxes of raisins
- small bags of pretzels
- hot apple cider
If you like to bake, this recipe for Yogurt Pumpkin Pie provides a more decadent treat with definite fall flavor:
Yogurt Pumpkin Pie
Ingredients:
- 1 1/2 cups plain, organic yogurt
- 2 cups pumpkin, steamed and drained through cheesecloth
- 3 eggs, beaten
- 3/4 cup agave nectar
- 1/2 tsp double vanilla
- 8-inch whole-grain pie crust
- pinch of Celtic salt
Directions: Pre-heat oven to 425 degrees. Place all the ingredients in an electric blender and mix well. Pour filling into the pie crust. Bake at 425 degrees for 15 minutes. Reduce heat to 350 degrees and bake for about one hour or until a knife comes out clean when inserted into custard. |

Treat Your Brain
What do you think of when you hear the term "brain fitness"? Sudoku? Crossword puzzles? Memory games? Nintendo's "Brain Training" game? Those games are useful brain fitness tools, but more generally brain fitness "is the capacity of a person to meet the various cognitive demands of life." More specifically, this capacity "is evident in an ability to assimilate information, comprehend relationships, and develop reasonable conclusions and plans. Brain fitness can be developed by formal education, being actively mentally engaged in life, continuing to learn, and [doing] exercises designed to challenge cognitive skills." ( Wikipedia).
Brain fitness also increases by increasing physical fitness. Several studies show that aerobic exercise has the most affect, possibly by increasing the amount of oxygen being delivered to the brain. It's thought to improve brain function and at least guard against the loss of brain matter.
In the air, draw a circle with your left hand and a triangle with your right, drawing the shapes continuously with both hands at the same time.
- Next, switch hands--draw a triangle with your left hand a draw a reverse circle with your right.
- Alternate hands and repeat the above. When you become proficient at drawing a circle and triangle, try drawing a square and triangle.
If you'd like to get a feel for your own brain fitness, you can try this fun, informal test on brainworld.com. It will challenge your brain's focus, speed, memory, simple math skills, and flexibility.
Just as we take care of our body, we can take care of our brain and keep it healthy, flexible, and active for the rest of our lives. |
