Health Tip: Keeping New Year's Resolutions
It's New Year's Resolution time! We
all have good intentions in the beginning of the year for making changes in our
lives. But sometimes, even if we are able to start putting those changes in
place, it isn't always easy to follow through until they're completed.
That's because our habits are very
strong--their pathways in our brain are very well tread. If you have ever been
discouraged by your habits or inability to achieve goals, it is really not
because you lack discipline or talent. Rather, it is simply that you do not
possess the right brain at the moment. If you really want to change a habit,
you have to retrain your brain by forming a new habit. Often in just
21 days of consistent practice you can develop the roots of a new habit.
Here are some tips for creating a new
habit:
- Make
a clear, measurable goal and then list three action steps you will take
toward it.
- Do
those action steps every day.
- Write
down your goal so that you can see it wherever you usually are and
reaffirm it in your mind frequently.
- Record
your progress and your thoughts about it in a journal or spreadsheet.
- Pay careful
attention, especially in the beginning, to your thoughts, emotions, and
behaviors. Is the habit you want to change a response to stress or a
substitute for something that is missing in your life? Do not judge what
you see, just make note of it and accept it. This awareness will help you
create your new habit.
- Manage
your stress and emotions by focusing on your center, which physically is two
inches below your navel and two inches inside your abdomen. You can do
exercises to help you feel it better and strengthen it such as tapping the
area with your hands or Dahn Yoga Energy Breathing.
- Give
yourself rewards along the way and at the end to encourage yourself.
- Share
what you are doing with others, or do it with them, to help keep yourself
motivated.
Good luck with your New Year's Resolutions! We hope
you create the life you want by changing one habit at a time. |
