Alliance Represented at National Park Service Northeast Region Workshop
by Marilyn Black, VP-Heritage Development
On May 3 - 5, directors and key staff of the National Heritage Areas located in the Northeast Region gathered in Baltimore, Maryland, to attend a training workshop conducted by the National Park Service. Marilyn Black represented the Oil Region National Heritage Area. Also typically attending are the NPS Park Superintendents who are assigned as liaisons to each of the NHAs. More than half of the NHAs in the country are situated in the Northeast Region.
The objectives of this workshop included assessing the state of National Heritage Areas, exploring ways that NHAs are adapting to change and positioning their organizations to ensure sustainability, and the sharing of models for reworking functional relationships with a variety of partners. In addition, there were

Several of these topics will be very useful in the strategic planning now underway by the Oil Region Alliance.
With the workshop being held at the Admiral Fell Inn on the Baltimore inner harbor, participants were given a special after-hours guided tour of nearby Fort McHenry, a NPS site which is an important part of the interpretive facilities found in the newly- named Baltimore National Heritage Area. |
Fireplace Insert Donated for Tarbell House
by Mike Henderson, Project Manager
Thanks to a generous donation from Donna and Howard Gaston, the Tarbell House now has a decorative replica coal burning fireplace insert. Donna felt the Tarbell House would be a perfect recipient for this decorative appliance, since the parlor fireplace did originally burn coal. The new device is set up to burn natural gas; and, similar to natural gas log inserts, it uses replica coal to give the appearance of a 19th-century home heating source. Thanks, Donna and Howard! |

Neilltown Church Memorial Garden Gets Facelift
by Mike Henderson, Project Manager
Thanks to the volunteer workers of the Venango County Master Gardeners, the memorial garden at the Neilltown Church has received some much-needed attention. Coordinated by Darlene Eaton and in cooperation with the Neilltown Cemetery Association, the Master Gardeners have so far cleaned up leaves, weeds, and old landscape fabric; trimmed or relocated bushes; and mulched. The memorial garden now looks very presentable and will be ready, along with the church, for the start of the concert series in July. |
Alliance Sends Free Educational Packages to Pennsylvania Libraries
by Melissa Mann, Oil 150 Deputy Director
In May, the Oil Region Alliance mailed free educational packages to the 650 public libraries in Pennsylvania. Each package contained
complementary DVD copies of the classroom version of The Valley that Changed the World and Stories of a Third-Generation Independent Oil Producer, As Told by Bill Huber, the two new documentaries produced during the Oil 150 commemoration. Each library also received a set of six Oil 150 bookmarks and an Alliance product catalog.
As one of Oil 150's final educational programs, it is the Alliance's hope that through the Commonwealth's libraries these free educational resources will foster an appreciation of our nation's oil history and its roots in Pennsylvania's Oil Region National Heritage Area for years to come.
This complementary resource distribution was made possible using Oil 150 funds. |
