Wednesday, April 21, 2010
by Betty Squire, VP-Marketing & Membership
The Oil Region will be represented in Harrisburg at a rally/press conference where industry representatives will speak about the economic importance of the tourism industry. John Oliver, President of the Pennsylvania Great Lakes Region (PGLR) representing Crawford, Erie, Mercer, and Venango County will be at the State Capitol Complex along with other tourism industry leaders from across the state at this year's Pennsylvania Tourism Day.
This annual event will provide an opportunity for us, as a region, to make a difference with coordinated visits with members of the PA General Assembly and share our perspective on key issues impacting the tourism industry and its partners.
Several of the issues that we as tourism professionals are trying to make an impact on legislation that has a direct effect on our agencies and members are: room taxes, tourism marketing funding, the state budget, mandated menu labeling, to name just a few. |

Deadline to Create Free Tap Into Manufacturing Profile Extended by Deb Lutz, Local Industry Manager
Tap Into Manufacturing is a new database designed to give northwest Pennsylvania industries a tool to reach business-to-business partners in the 13-county NW PA region. Search Connect Grow
Companies create profiles at www.tapintomanufacturing.com. The profiles are detailed, with keywords that allow the business to optimize their information for access by businesses searching the database for services. The date to create a FREE profile has been extended until June 1, 2010. Regardless of when you enroll, you will not be billed until June 1. At that time, the yearly subscription (with a June 1 anniversary date) will be $250 for businesses with less than $1 million in sales, or $500 for business with sales greater than $1 million. It is not a cumbersome process to complete the profiles and they can be updated as frequently as necessary. This is a way for a regional business or industry to break through marketing clutter! The database was developed by the Erie Regional Chamber and Growth Partnership. Jacob Rouch, Vice President of ERCGP, says companies are often defined by what they did ten years ago, even though it may have branched out or expanded to other products. Rouch says companies must pay to be listed in any of several categories in publications like Thomas or Hoover. It's not inexpensive. The Tap Into Manufacturing web site allows a company to compose a company profile and targets marketing to interested and related manufacturers. Tap Into Manufacturing is a great tool for business-to-business connection and for outsiders to find regional sources. If any Venango County manufacturer is interested in this service, we encourage you to check out the website. If you need assistance, call the Alliance economic development department, and we would be happy to walk you through the process. |

Alliance President Randy Seitz said, "Families will recognize this special assortment of uplifting melodies which span the period of 1880 through 1969, penned primarily by song writers in the United States."
Songs will be from the "Sound of Music," "The Wizard of Oz," and other musicals; folk songs like "Let There Be Peace on Earth;" and sentimental favorites like "Love's Old Sweet Song" and "Dear Hearts and Gentle People."
Admission of $7 includes refreshments; tickets are available at the door. Advance reservations may be directed to the Museum at 676-2007.
Thanks to the grant which is making this concert possible, its practice sessions are being recorded and photographed for production into a $15 CD, "Uplifting Memories as performed at the Venango Museum of Art, Science & Industry." Order forms will be distributed at the concert; all CD sales benefit the Museum.
This project was made possible through the PA Partners in the Arts (PPA), a local decision-making program of the PA Council on the Arts, a state agency. PPA is administered in this region by the Venango Center for Creative Development. This concert and the CD is a joint project of the Venango Museum and the Oil Region Alliance.

Energy Efficiency Assistance Awards Available
by Deb Lutz, Local Industry Manager
The Oil Region Alliance has energy assistance awards available through an SBA earmark that is available to Oil Region manufacturers.
With escalating energy costs, many businesses are finding their operating costs escalating well beyond their control. There is assistance of up to 50% or $7,500 to help businesses with E2 assessments.
The comprehensive assessments include an initial walk-through followed by brainstorming session to identify priority E2 issues that are to be evaluated in depth. Assistance includes detailed data collection (utility bills, energy usage profile, metering, interviews) as well as consideration of process heating and process cooling issues. Measurements made to quantify energy cost saving opportunities (ECO's) are considered. The assessment also includes "back of the envelope" financial analysis. This may be sufficient to act on some ECOs. Other ECOs may need further detailed technical/feasibility analysis. The comprehensive E2 assessment is not a comprehensive engineering technical or economic feasibility analysis.
The assessment must be performed by a qualified assessor and can include: Electric power & billing review; Sales tax exemption analysis; Lighting upgrade & Epact tax deduction; Building envelope; Space heating; Motors; Fan systems; Pumping systems; Compressed air; Boiler & steam systems; Process cooling - cooling towers; chillers; Process heating; Alternative/renewable energy source options
The Alliance is partnering with The Pennsylvania Technical Assistance Program (PennTAP) or The Electrotechnology Applicants Center (ETAC) to provide the assessment. Please call the economic development office at 677-3152 for details and an application. |

"Saving America's Treasures" Week Observed
by Toni Kresinski, Events Manager
About 30 people gathered at the Tarbell House in Titusville on April 8 so Project Manager Mike Henderson could take a photo to commemorate "Saving America's Treasures" week. Folks in the photo held signs saying "This Treasure Matters." Lynn Cressman's 11th grade English class from Titusville High School showed their support along with the Titusville Historical Society and community members. Many of the people then went to Drake Well for a photo in front of the Standard Rig.
Both of these projects have benefited from federal funding which is in danger of being either severely cut or eliminated from the proposed federal budget. The photos will be uploaded to the National Trust for Historic Preservation web site, with other such photos from across the country, in the hope that legislators will be moved by the community support for these projects and restore funding. |
Allegheny Overlook Ready for Spring Construction
by Mike Henderson, Project Manager
The scenic pedestrian Allegheny Overlook is close to reality. Reck Construction of Oil City is the general contractor, and groundbreaking should occur this spring. Made possible by funding from PA DCNR, Oil City CDBG, and the Alliance, this plaza-styled overlook will include planters, landscaping, benches, and an ornamental fence that will also provide safety. The site will be paved and be fully handicapped-accessible. It will be on the grassy lot directly across Spring Street from the Allegheny Overlook apartment complex and will provide views of the Allegheny River valley and the lower Oil Creek valley. |
