Oil Region Alliance Welcomed National Tour Association (NTA)
by Betty Squire Through our partnership with the Pennsylvania Great Lakes Region (Crawford, Erie, Mercer, and Venango Counties), we welcomed tour operators to the Oil Heritage Region on Thursday, November 20, for a post FAM (familiarization) Tour. They were in Pennsylvania as part of the NTA National Convention that was being held in Pittsburgh, PA. While our time was short, Betty Squire, VP Marketing & Membership, and Marie Rainey, Tourism Services Coordinator, were elated at the opportunity to escort the group that traveled by bus from Pittsburgh to our region. Some of the stops on their trip here were at the DeBence Antique Music World Museum and St. John's Episcopal Church in Franklin; Venango Museum of Art, Science & Industry in Oil City; and Perry Street Station, The Caboose Motel and Drake Well Museum in Titusville. Lunch was provided to the FAM group by Perk Place Café in Titusville. The tour operators were from Denver, CO; Seattle, WA; Carson City, NV; Ozark, MO; and Indianapolis, IN. These are individuals that put together week-long trips throughout the United States. Many of the groups cater to the senior market. While on their trip through the Oil Heritage Region, they were very pleased at the range of possibilities for their future use. As well as a day in the Oil Heritage Region, the NTA group spent time in Crawford and Erie Counties. The funds for this FAM tour were provided by a grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Tourism through the Regional Marketing Program for 2008/2009.

Oil 150 Featured at AOGHS Annual Conference by Melissa Mann On November 12-14, state and national energy educators and petroleum museum directors met in Houston, Texas, for the American Oil & Gas Historical Society's third annual Energy Education Conference & Field Trip. Oil 150 Deputy Director Melissa Mann was the featured speaker at the conference's special Oil 150 luncheon. She presented an overview of Oil 150, focusing specifically on the educational opportunities presented by the anniversary. Highlighting Oil 150's Nationwide Museum Kit Program, Nationwide Poster Initiative, and new documentary film project, Ms. Mann demonstrated how museums and energy education programs around the country can participate in the celebration. Over the course of the conference, attendees shared their energy education strategies and success stories in open panel discussions. They also attended a workshop featuring the Offshore Energy Center's new Mobile Offshore Learning Unit (MOLU), a $1.2 million traveling exhibit as well as a reception and tour of the Houston Museum of Natural Science's Wiess Energy Hall. On the final day of the conference, participants enjoyed tours of the Schlumberger Technology Center in Sugar Land and of Varel International, a manufacturer of drill bits for the global oil and gas industry, headquartered in Carrollton, Texas. The fourth annual AOGHS Energy Education Conference & Field Trip will be held in the Pennsylvania Oil Heritage Region during the summer of 2009.

DCNR Grants Announced
by Marilyn Black Governor Edward G. Rendell on November 18 announced 316 approved conservation and recreation projects as grants totaling nearly $44 million from the PA Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. Among the Community Conservation Partnership Program (C2P2) grants awarded is a subset which is exclusively available to the official PA Heritage Areas. DCNR approved a $20,000 grant to the Oil Region Alliance toward the Oil 150 Nationwide Museum Educational Kit Program which will provide kits to oil, natural gas, science, and children's museums across the country. The National Park Service has also dedicated $20,000 in their FFY 2008 cooperative agreement with the ORA toward the museum kit project. Several foundations in other states have approved monetary support as well. Miss Melissa Mann, Oil 150 Deputy Director, is coordinating the development of materials for inclusion in these kits and the accompanying nationwide essay contest. Also approved is a $25,000 engineering study to extend the Queen City Trail in Titusville through Oil Creek Township and into Hasbrouck Park in Hydetown Borough in Crawford County. The municipalities will be furnishing the matching funds for this study, which is slated to occur during 2009. Mrs. Kim Harris, Project Manager within the Heritage Development Department, will provide staff support to this project; she is also advising other active bike trail work involving the Oil Region Alliance. In April, 2008, the Oil Region Alliance submitted a total of 12 applications for PA Heritage Areas Program funding which would have amounted to $500,000 and one large request C2P2 for trail engineering/pre-construction work on a different segment of trail (specifically, Phase II of the McClintock Trail). Due to significant funding reductions across the Commonwealth, DCNR does not anticipate being able to approve any other grants to the Oil Region Alliance during the state 2008/2009 fiscal year.

New ORNHA Visitor Center Slated For Completion In 2009
by Kim Harris
The historic Perry Street Station in Titusville will soon host the second Oil Region National Heritage Area Visitor Center. Designs were completed in 2007 by the firm of Phoenixx Design Associates of York, PA. The three-dimensional interpretive exhibits are entitled "Moving it" with special emphasis on the Railway, and "Settlement of the Queen City" including the role of Titusville as the early financial and social capital to the 1860s oil boom. To engage visitors, the exhibit contains several interactive components such as "The Race Game" designed to see what method of transportation (horse/wagon/barge, Densmore Tank Car, or Pipeline) is the most efficient method of transportation. Vendor selection for final graphic design, fabrication and installation was completed and approved by the Oil Region Alliance Board of Directors in November. Phoenixx Design, the firm selected for this project, will fabricate the exhibit off-site and complete the installation by May 2009. The first visitor center opened in June 2003 inside the Crawford Center in Emlenton. The theme of that exhibit is "Blue River/Black Gold." The exhibit tells the story of Emlenton and its relationship to the Allegheny River, drilling for oil and natural gas. Fabrication and installation of the Perry Street Station Visitor Center is financed in part by a Pennsylvania Heritage Area Program Grant from the PA Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Bureau of Recreation and Conservation via Oil Region Alliance. Matching funds are provided by the National Park Service and the Oil Creek Railway Historical Society.

Grant Applications Filed by ORA in December
by Marilyn Black On December 1, the Oil Region Alliance submitted several grant applications to the PA Historical and Museum Commission. PHMC will review the applications, with decisions announced next August. "The Original Oil Boom of the Oil Heritage Region and the American Civil War" is the title for an application seeking $15,000 as a Local History Grant, to establish 9th grade curriculum materials and conduct six public round-table discussions about the intertwined events which are each celebrating their 150th anniversaries. Signing on as collaborative partners in this project are Valley Grove School District, the Pumping Jack Museum, Borough of Emlenton, Venango County Historical Society, and the Venango Museum of Art, Science & Industry. The round-table sessions will be conducted in Emlenton, Franklin, Oil City, Meadville, and Titusville, with the concluding session being presented by students. Educators from these sectors will review and evaluate the lesson plans, student activities, and learning guides prepared by a contracted educational consultant. The materials will be posted to the www.oil150.com website for convenient access. Another collaborative application is called "Establishing Archives of Former U. S. Congressman John Peterson." Documents, photographs, and other artifacts from his offices in State College and Titusville will be condensed, indexed, transferred to acid-free containers, and established as a new archival collection. This project will involve Titusville Historical Society, Titusville Redevelopment Authority, the University of Pittsburgh at Titusville, Congressman Peterson, and ORA personnel. The application requests $15,000 as an Archives and Records Management Grant. The Oil Region Alliance would be a subcontractor in a $5,000 grant application submitted by the Petroleum History Institute, which is also situated in the National Transit Building in Oil City. This archival project will be Phase I of the Preservation of the Samuel Pees Photo Collection which is now in the stewardship of the non-profit corporation PHI. By December 12, an application for $20,000 will be submitted by the Oil Region Alliance to the County of Forest requesting Community Development Block Grant support for the rehabilitation of the former Neilltown Church building in Harmony Township. The County will consider this request when writing their annual CDBG program/expenditure plan. This financial assistance will help fulfill the matching fund requirements for a Keystone Historic Preservation Grant which is currently active for the Neilltown Church project.

by Toni Kresinski
Plans are progressing for the "Preserving Victorian Collections and Architecture Conference" which will be held May 8 & 9, 2009, in Titusville. Formerly known as the "Victorian Architecture and its Preservation Conference," the "Preserving Victorian Collections and Architecture Conference" is now in its tenth year. It is coordinated by the Oil Region Alliance of Business, Industry & Tourism. The Titusville Historical Society and the University of Pittsburgh at Titusville are assisting with planning and hosting this Conference.
Seminars and guided tours showcasing Titusville's diverse Victorian-era buildings and structures will be held. Workshops will be offered on preserving artifacts, documents and collections as well as maintaining historic buildings. Most of the workshops will be held on the campus of the University of Pittsburgh at Titusville. The only exception is the dessert reception with Catherine M. V. Thuro on the evening of Friday, May 8, which will be held at Perry Street Station, located at 409 South Perry Street in Titusville. Mrs. Thuro is a fellow of the Corning Museum, as well as a researcher, writer and consultant in the field of kerosene lighting. She has authored three books on the subject, including Oil Lamps, the Kerosene Era in North America. Those attending the dessert reception may take one kerosene lamp for an on-the-spot evaluation by Mrs. Thuro. Other highlights of the Preservation Conference are visits to local Victorian-era homes that are currently listed for sale, blacksmithing demonstrations at Drake Well Park, a Victorian Tea and Tour of the Ashley residence in Titusville, and the awarding of the 2009 Oil Heritage Region Historic Preservation Awards at a banquet on Saturday evening at Pitt Campus.
