February is considered the month of love for many people. Stores and commercials constantly remind us that Valentine's Day is around the corner. And although it's certainly good to celebrate romantic love, it's also good to remember and celebrate other kinds of love that don't necessarily have a national holiday attached to it.
Familial love. The love between parents and children, brothers and sisters, grandparents and other extended family is a very special kind of love. Familial love is a unique bond between people that share the same bloodline or who have known each other since birth. These are the people that have seen you grow up and have been a constant in your life. Sure, these relationships can be the most complex ones you may have, but they can also be the most remarkable. Remember to tell your family you love them.
Friendship. Some say you can't choose your family, but you can choose your friends. That's what makes these relationships so important. You bring people into your life for a reason; you feel a clear bond with them on some level. And whether they're with you for months or years, friends are your chosen family. They see you as an individual, accept you for who you are and respect your similarities and differences. Love between friends can last for a lifetime.
Love for a pet. Animals understand us in a much different way than people do. Many people turn to their pets when they're feeling down and many animals sense the need for love and seek to comfort us. Pets give us unconditional love that can take our blues away in an instant. It's important that we give love back to them in return. Beyond food and shelter, taking care of an animal is a very special kind of love.
Love of Self. Perhaps most importantly, we must know how to love ourselves. When we can accept and embrace who we are - including every quirk, fault and character flaw - only then can we truly find inner peace. Getting support and love from others is certainly important, however we must be able to look in the mirror and like what we see. Love of ones' self gives us the ability to accept some flaws, and the desire to change other flaws we may decide need to change. Striving to be a better person begins with embracing who we are right now.
