NEWPORT NEWS YMCA ADULT VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR

Tannis Baldwin started taking private swim lessons at the Y inTannis2
October 2004. Her husband told her if she learned how to swim that he would take her to Discovery Cove to swim with the dolphins for her birthday. Tannis didn't want to just be in the water with the dolphins, she wanted to swim with the dolphins. So began Tannis's journey of session after session of private lessons until Tannis was comfortable swimming in all depths of water. She did get her wish to swim with the dolphins at Discovery Cove.

While taking private lessons, Tannis's instructor talked Tannis into volunteering to help out with children's swim lessons. Since 2005, Tannis has been viewed as a part of our aquatics staff, volunteering with our adult swim lessons and Aqua-Pilates. Many days Tannis starts in the morning with our adults and ends her day with us coming back late afternoons teaching Newport News children how to swim.

Thank you Tannis, through sharing your achievements, you have impacted the lives of our members.

NEWPORT NEWS YMCA TEEN VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR

Jonathan Williams joined the Newport News YMCA in 2007 whenJonathan2 his mother enrolled him in the School Age program and Summer Camp.  He quickly became a fixture in the program and was at almost every Kids Night Out and special event that was held at the Newport News YMCA.  Jonathan was one of the quieter students in the School Age program, however, it was only a matter of time before.

Jonathan was asking if we needed any help cleaning, preparing arts and craft projects, leading a game for the younger participants or anything else anyone could think of.  It seemed like he always wanted to help wherever he could.  As Jonathan began to age out of the School Age program he was concerned with the fact that he wouldn't be able to help out or to attend Kids Night Out or the Special Events that he enjoyed so much.  Jonathan found out about Leaders Club and patiently waited for the following school year and joined in 2010 where he exceeded his required 100 hours of volunteer hours and attended Blue Ridge Leaders School.

Throughout the summer and school year Jonathan can be found volunteering as a School-Age tutor daily, at Kids Night Out, Special Events and at the Welcome Center where the once quiet student has become an excellent role model for other Leader's Club participants as well as a warm and welcoming member of the Newport News YMCA team.
