SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
In the past two newsletters you've learned about two of our three areas of focus: Youth Development and Healthy Living. This month we'd like to tell you about the third area of focus, SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY.

The Y has been listening and responding to our communities' most critical social needs for 160 years. Simply put, we think it is important to give back and to support our neighbors. You've probably heard about our Bright Beginnings program that gives at-risk children greater self-esteem and confidence by providing school clothes, shoes, coats and supplies. Bright Beginnings is our most visible response to social need, but every Y program addresses societal issues in some way. For instance, sports programs teach children to cooperate, to work in a team, to be aware of how their actions affect others, and help to fight the largest growing national epidemic for children, obesity.

Through the Y, volunteers, donors, leaders, and partners empower people to be healthy, confident, connected and secure.

BREAKFAST OF YMCA CHAMPIONS

Breakfast of Y ChampionsThe Newport News YMCA Board of Managers sponsored the 4th Annual Breakfast with Y Champions on November 5th, 2010. The fundraising event was held at the James River Country Club.  Approximately 90 people, made up of community leaders, YMCA members and friends of board members came together to learn about what the Y does in our community. John Gerke, Board Chair, Tripp Spencer,  and LaMonte Williams led the program.

Our key note speaker was Delegate Glenn Oder, and testimonials from Newport News Y members: Kara Keeling and Bertha Thompson.

The Spencer Group at MorganStanley SmithBarney, was our Breakfast sponsor.

The event donations go toward our Guardian scholarships; as of November 2010, the Newport News Family YMCA serves 3,395 households and 8,729 members.  Thirty three percent (30.7%) of our membership receives financial assistance allowing them to take part in YMCA membership and programs.  The funds raised are used to subsidize scholarships. By December 2010, the Newport News Family hopes to reach its Strong Communities annual goal of raising $61,500.
