Summer Camp

Don't Let Summer Pass By: Spend it at Newport News Family YMCA Summer Camp

The summer break is fast approaching. While some kids and teens may prefer to spend their summer vacation playing video games or watching television, the Newport News Family YMCA reminds parents of the value of enrolling their child in summer camp at the YMCA.

"At Newport News Family YMCA, youth are safe and cared for, and they have experiences that they don't typically get at home or school," says Mitchell Clancy, Camp Diretcor, "At camp, kids become part of a camp community that helps them to build life-long friendships and create lasting memories."

Camping experts at the YMCA say that summer camp can make a meaningful impact on youth in several ways:
  • Youth experience "unstructured" playtime that they normally don't have at home or school, thus learning how to become independent, make smart choices, solve problems and work with others.
  • The experience of trying and learning new things, including adventurous outdoor activities, gives youth confidence and helps them develop healthy life-long habits.
  • As fewer youth are spending time outdoors, camp gets youth outdoors, leading them to develop an awareness and appreciation for nature.
  • At camp youth are loved and given guidance, and feel a part of a community, allowing them to feel comfortable being themselves without judgment.
  • Youth learn from other campers and counselors, and make new friends to share it all with.
This year, the YMCA celebrates the 125th Anniversary of Camping at the YMCA. The Newport News Family YMCA Summer Camp will join the more than 2,000 day camps and more than 300 resident camps across the country in celebrating this milestone.

Volunteers!

Thank you to Panera Volunteers:
Richard Hudgins, Kathy Lacasse, Roslyn Das, Angela Hurst,
Valerie Wolfe, Don Coccoli.  This team of volunteers picks up the leftover bread from the CNU Panera store at 9:00 Tuesday nights and delivers it to the YMCA early Wednesday morning.  Then the bread is divided into family sized bags and set out for the members.
