Volunteer of the Year
The YMCA depends on volunteers; each year we celebrate the contributions of the most outstanding adult and teen volunteers at our Annual Meeting held in February. Please join me in congratulating Angela Dickens and Danelle Blake.
Angela Dickens has volunteered for the Y since 2005 starting as a Strong Communities campaigner through our swim lesson program. Throughout the years, Angela has moved up the campaign ladder serving as a team captain and in 2008/2009 serving as our Community Division Chair. Angela believes in the YMCA and making our YMCA programs inclusive for all members through our Guardian program. She has been instrumental moving the branch forward toward making our Strong Communities campaign truly a volunteer-driven and led program. She connects with our 75 Strong Communities volunteers and motivates them through creative ideas and her passion to raise funds for our Guardian program. Angela is an inspiration to our staff and members, especially when she tells our Y story and talks about our mission. Angela also helped us make Strong Communities a year-round priority through continued relationship building with volunteers and members. Angela has also served on our Mission Development committee for the past two years. We look forward to Angela's continued service at our branch as she has accepted a seat on our Board. Teen Volunteer of the Year
Fourteen year-old Danelle has been with the Newport News Leader's Club for 3 years. She has volunteered over 250 hours at our branch and represented the Leader's Club at the Blue Ridge Leader School for the past 2 years. She is in 9th grade at Peninsula Catholic High School and she has been coming to the YMCA since birth. She is also very active on her high school's volleyball team and her student council, where she has previously served as President of her class. When asked if she could be like one person in the world Danelle replied, "I would be like my 8th grade English teacher, Mrs. Wasmer. She is an awesome person who is kind, generous and -helpful."
