Dear Friends and Colleagues:
Happy Spring, the time is flying by but I am embracing every minute of it.
Recently celebrating a wonderful birthday, I couldn't have asked for a better day and year so far. Many of my dreams have come true. I am published in Essence Magazine, I had the opportunity to write the beauty feature for the April 2010 issue on page 48. Along with Essence, I have picked up some exciting new writing opportunities.
This month I had the honor to interview two eloquent and hard working women. They both have roots in Michigan. Tracey Ferguson is Founder and Editor-in-Chief of JONES Magazine, it will launch nationally the week of April 15th. She is also the star of her own reality show, Keeping up With the Joneses, which will premiere on Centric TV April 8, 2010.I met Tracey at New York Fashion Week while eating lunch with my colleague. Her partner walked in the restaurant, I recognized him because he is the person who piqued my interest in entertainment law. He introduced us and told me that they were sitting down to meet about JONES Magazine. Talk about synergy. Tracey agreed to an interview and also asked me to write an article and be a contributing editor for the national launch of JONES Magazine.
Tori Nichel is a Michigan born fashion designer who was born into a fashionable family. At 7 years old she knew that she wanted to be in the industry. She took control and started taking classes at 16 years old, the rest is successful history.
I hope all of you are staying focused and persistent on your chosen path. Thank you for your continued support.
xo,

Living the Dream |
|
When Tracey Ferguson had a chance to launch JONES magazine in Houston, she jumped at the chance. Originally a publication that would cater to the specific city and grow regionally, her life changed when she was presented with the opportunity to launch her magazine nationally. "It is scary and exciting, especially with the state of the magazine industry. but I wanted a magazine that catered to the professional and mature audience, I noticed the Claire Huxtables were being ignored," she says. As a trendsetter herself, Ferguson wants her readers to have exposure. "For women in the African American community, we really rely on the blessing of a product, or new restaurant from our girlfriends, I want JONES to be that resource."
Full of fashion, trends and everything "Jones" Ferguson is excited for the national launch of her magazine and website. She is also highly anticipating her own reality television show, Keeping up With the Joneses, which will air on Centric TV starting April 8, 2010. This project was a surprise in itself for Ferguson. "I received a call from a production company, we auditioned and taped. I didn't hear anything for about two years and it was my friends who told me the show was picked up," she explains. With reality shows now primarily mainstream entertainment, Ferguson understands that she has the power to open many doors. As the first African-American woman to have her own reality show based on a magazine, she knew that she had to be very careful. "This is a compelling business decision, so we had to work to benefit the business," she explains.
With a crazy busy schedule, Ferguson relaxes by spending time with her family and traveling. She stays motivated by seeing projects materialize and getting the stamp of approval from her teenage children.

Fashion Forward |

Tori Nichel knew from the age of 7 that she wanted to work in fashion and have her own company. "Everything I did was related to fashion. My dream was very clear, I didn't want to work for someone else my entire career." Knowing this, Nichel met her fashion mentor at age 16. "I met Christiane and started classes with her. I had to beg her to take me as her youngest student. She was tough, she mentally and skillfully prepared me for my career in fashion," she says. As her life long mentor, Nichel is overly impressed with the fact that Christiane now, 83, who used to model for Dior and teach at the Art Institute of Chicago climbs the Appalachian Mountains four times a year.
After completing her degrees at Michigan State University and the Fashion Institute of Technology, she headed to New York to start her career. "I asked my parents for a plane ticket to New York for my birthday. With my portfolio in tow, I literally pounded the pavement and went door to door for interviews. After 5 days, I landed a job at Dana Buchman. Three weeks later I moved to New York to start making my dream a reality."
Starting her company in 2006, Nichel's collection has grown tremendously."I feel blessed to nurture the growth of my collection and brand over the years. The size of the collection has remained the same but the brand recognition has grown exponentially," she says. Known for tailored jumpsuits and flirty dresses, Nichel always includes a signature jumpsuit of the season and creates one of kind prints for the dresses that are specific to the Tori Nichel aesthetic.
In the future Nichel will continue to build her online presence. She launched her eBay boutique that opened last week. She is also creating and writing a cartoon series. "It is very surreal to be blessed enough to live your dream. I count my blessings everyday and take nothing for granted. I am not there yet, I have much more to achieve but I am excited to see myself grow."
