Dear Friends and Colleagues: I hope all of you are enjoying your summer. One thing I have continued to learn and embrace is the art of acceptance. In the spring I had a few setbacks, roadblocks and was forced to sit still. Now, I understand it was the universe preparing me for growth and better things to come in my life. As I was sitting still for a brief moment, I realized that I had to readjust certain situations. I also realized that my thoughts, at every moment, are creating my future. So I took it back to basics. Not a day at a time but a minute at a time. Paying attention to everything and really focusing on what needed to change. I made some self promises and kept them. I learned that some situations that I was worrying about were pointless. I had to release certain people from my life where others granted me the favor and released themselves. (Yeah I said it!) I also realized that we are never alone. That little voice in your head that is guiding you is the universe speaking to you to move out of darkness into the light. The moment you think you have nothing else to give and at your breaking point find the strength to keep moving because this is when change is happening. I had to reestablish my faith, so I simply reached out my hand and asked the creator to hold it and never let go so forever can begin. And it has begun. This summer has been fantastic. I have learned so much about myself. Had an opportunity to travel a bit and most importantly spend time with family. We celebrated my Aunts, who are twins, 80th Birthday. I also saw my Uncle who is 86 very active, exercises everyday, and teaches health at his temple three days a week in Brooklyn. Simply hearing that and seeing how full of life my elders are is motivation in itself to continue on my purpose, release the pointless and get to work, because there is a lot to be done. This month I interviewed two women who have always had a passion for writing. Their personal stories and experiences led them down the path of publishing. Paula Tutman, a local correspondent for WDIV 4 in Detroit tells us about her book DEADLINE!. Kimberly Seals-Allers, is the author of The Mocha Manual series of books and Editor In Chief of MochaManual.com, the fast growing web-based publication for today's African American moms and moms-to-be. Thank you for reading and enjoy the rest of your summer! Peace and Blessings, Yvelette

Path of Dreams |
|
Many times when the universe creates a specific path for us it is for a reason. For Paula Tutman, she was lead down the path of television and her passion and love for writing led her to write her first book called DEADLINE. "I always wanted to write. I kind of wandered into television news. I had no idea it would give me such rich material to write about," she says. It was her own story when she was a police reporter in Baltimore that became the premise of DEADLINE. The book "is about a TV reporter (who) shows up on the scene of a double murder. The killer realizes that (she is) his favorite on air personality. He makes a decision to keep killing so she'll likely show up and he will get an opportunity to meet her and make her his own," explains Tutman. As an author and local correspondent for WDIV, Tutman appreciates the fact that both careers "go hand in hand. Part of why I love my work is that it keeps me sharp. I meet so many different kinds of people. The stories of life end up as storylines for my books," she says. There will be continuous storylines from Tutman, her next book will be released November 30, 2009. A woman who lives an extremely busy life she always finds time for writing because it completes who she is. "Writing is like air to me. I get lost inside my writing and I'm lost without it." Manual for Changes in Life |

When Kimberly Seals-Allers entered into the chapter of motherhood, she found that her informational resources were limited. "When I was expecting my first child, I didn't find any books that really spoke to me as a modern, savvy black woman," she says. She was inspired to write her first book. The Mocha Manual to a Fabulous Pregnancy was published in December 2005. "This is a book that educates black woman on an important topic while giving them something that didn't exist. I didn't necessarily want medical advice, which you can find very easily, but the down home, what your girlfriends needs to tell you about pregnancy type of book. I didn't find that so I decided to write it," she explains. With writing the books she also created an online magazine called MochaManual.com. She is also founder of The Mocha Manual Company, the emerging brand for African American women. The company operates MochaManual.com, creates and distributes the Mocha Manual maternity and new dad tee shirt line, and licenses the Mocha Manual to a Fabulous Pregnancy DVD, sold nationwide at Wal-Mart and Acme Supermarkets. Seals-Allers always had a thirst for curiosity. "I was always drawn to the craft of journalism. My mom told me that I was nosey and that I as might as well get paid for it." She took the path and attained her degree in Journalism and Secondary English Education from New York University and her Masters from Columbia University. In January, she published The Mocha Manual to Turning your Passion into Profit. On June 30, 2009 The Mocha Manual to Military Life was released. As a busy entrepreneur and mother Seals-Allers finds balance in "playing with my kids. They have a way of making me laugh more and appreciate the simple things in life."
