Q and A

Green Lemonade
Green Lemonade

A number of you have been asking me about green lemonade, how to make it and if I actually drink it.  Yes, I drink it just about every morning and  it really does taste like lemonade.

There are many versions of the recipe but I use this particular recipe that I read in the Raw Food Detox Diet by Natalia Rose.

This makes one serving
You will need a juicer
1 head of romaine lettuce
5 to 6 stalks of kale
1 to 2 apples
1 whole lemon
Fresh ginger is optional I personally don't use it.

If you try it let me know your thoughts. Enjoy!
Dear Friends and Colleagues:

I hope all of you are having a wonderful holiday. As it is all coming to an end we are encountering new beginnings. Many see the new year as an opportunity to get a fresh start, put the past behind us and create new opportunities. Although it is not healthy to dwell on the past, we should realize that the past helps us create our future so it is good to reflect and understand the lessons and blessings. Remember, everything does happen for a reason.

For a couple of years I would fear the thought of the new year, I still don't understand why, maybe the unknown.  Now, it is exciting because as much as we plan you never know what is right around the corner. As we say farewell to 2008, I can say it was a wonderful and busy year.  I am happily exhausted and very excited to see what is in store. There are many projects in the making including my book which will be published in 2009. I am happy to see this finally come to light. It is beyond a dream come true!

This month I interviewed  Janice and Denise Tunnell founders of Illusions Cosmetics and Megy Karydes founder of www.World-Shoppe.com.  All of these women saw that there was a need for change and created an opportunity for themselves and many others.

I wish each of you a wonderful, successful and healthy year, 2008 was great but it is time to shine in 2009.

Cosmetic Change
 Tunnell Sisters
When sisters and celebrity makeup artists Janice and Denise Tunnell saw that there was something lacking in the makeup industry for women of color, they created an opportunity and started their own line called Illusions cosmetics. "I saw it was difficult for women of color to find foundation colors that were more appropriate for their skin tones," says Denise Tunnell. The company started in 1998 as a lip gloss line and re-launched in 2006 as a full cosmetics line. Since then, Illusions has grown tremendously. "After re-launching, we have gone from word of mouth, to national magazine exposure, to celebrity clientele and participation at celebrity events. Now, we are being sold at salons in the United States and Canada. There is also a large online presence and following," explains Janice Tunnell.

Along with running a full time business, the sisters also work on many feature films. "When you are a young company, everything you make goes right back into the business, so you have to wear as many hats as possible. Since we are both makeup artist for films this can take us away from the daily activities of our business," says Janice. Collectively the sisters have worked on movies such as Stomp the Yard, Idlewild, The Notebook, Big Fish, ATL, The Wedding Crashers, and Hustle and Flow.

Both sisters are feeling very blessed  about their endless opportunities, they encourage others who want to follow in their footsteps to "have a true passion," says Denise. "You must always have a plan, you must study your craft, and work hard because you are the only one responsible for your success," adds Janice.

Shopping for Change

  Megy Karydes

Megy Karydes was strongly humbled by the poverty rate of women and children in the world. She used her knowledge and power to create change. Karydes started www.world-shoppe.com in 2004. "I launched this as a volunteer project to help women in developing countries gain a stronger voice by generating income for their talents and work," says Karydes.

The store has gifts, home accessories and jewelry from more than 22 developing countries that are all handmade and fairly traded. As a full time Consultant for her own company, Karydes Consulting, she used her skills and knowledge to market the website on a national level. "This not only helped drive traffic to the website but it also educated Americans on what fair trade is and why it is important," she says.

As a socially conscious individual, Karydes is proud to involve herself and educate others about the importance of fair trade. "I am involved in the local fair trade movement in Chicago, I sit on the board of Chicago Fair Trade and World Shoppe is a member of the Fair Trade Federation.
