Dear Friends and Colleagues:
The first holiday of the summer is here. For some of us it is a day off, spending time with family and friends, or taking a vacation. As we celebrate Independence Day, many of us may, or may not, reflect upon the representation of the holiday. When I think about the holiday, one thing that comes to mind is personal freedom. The only way we can be truly free on an individual level is to seek our own personal truth. For some reason this is very difficult for a lot of people. In situations when we are blocked, hurt or really questioning something, we most likely already know the answer but we are afraid to trust ourselves enough to follow our own voices.
Many of us are seeking or questioning something at this present moment. You could be in the process of changing careers, moving, releasing someone from your life, or thinking about bringing someone new into your personal circle. Whatever your situation is, it is essential to ask the right questions and give yourself honest answers so that you can continue on your chosen path that is right for you. Sometimes we may not like our answers or feel uncomfortable because our decisions will take us out of our comfort zone, it is important to realize that being uncomfortable is one of the elements of personal growth. This month, I encourage you to really dig deep and seek your personal truth. The process can be both painful and empowering, but knowing that you found the strength to be true to yourself creates confidence, character and integrity along with personal freedom. Two books that I recommend are The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho (one of my personal favorites) and The Right Questions by Debbie Ford. In this issue I had the honor to interview critically acclaimed writer Mitzi Miller who recently wrote the cover story about Usher for Vibe Magazine and CEO of Kinky Curly Shelley Davis. Have a wonderful and safe holiday! Peace and Blessings,

For anyone who wants to follow their dream, Mitzi Miller encourages everyone to start immediately. "Start now!" she emphasizes. "The world has changed so much from two years ago, we don't even know what is going to happen tomorrow." As someone who is encouraging everyone to pursue their dream and live their best life to the fullest, Miller is speaking from experience. Celebrating her 10 year liver transplant recipient anniversary on June 30, 2008, Miller, 32, is happy to be alive. "I am so blessed to be living and working in my career," she says excitedly. "I never planned life beyond 10 years because recipients are not supposed live beyond that time. I am so lucky and grateful and I wouldn't take this experience back nor wish it on anyone," she continues. Miller does wish that people would live without fear. "living without fear, that is what makes successful people, they never let fear stop them," she says. Once again living and speaking from experience her fearlessness helped her land her dream job. "I was working in sales and marketing for nine months, and it was not for me." One night she saw Amy Barnett, who was Managing Editor of Honey Magazine, outside of a night club. Miller used her humor and intelligence to convince Barnett, author of Get Yours! , to give her a chance. "Two weeks later I was an intern at Honey Magazine, I moved up to Entertainment Editor and won and NABJ award for an article Killing Me Softly," she says. In 2003 Miller was on staff at Jane Magazine and writing critically acclaimed books. Her most recent book Hotlanta, written with Denene Millner, was published this spring. It is a series set in Atlanta targeted toward teen readers. With all her success Miller realizes that she is still learning and growing as a writer. "I want to take some classes because learning is a great way to improve your craft it is also important to be able to accept criticism and help." Her advice for those who want to follow their dreams is simply never give up. "It is important to do something toward your goal. Everyone gets up and is still striving to get somewhere. The majority of people that we look up to are still hustling, so never give up. Everyday is a new opportunity to start over." | |

A healthy mission |

Shelley Davis was looking for a hair product that would leave her curls nourished and healthy. In her quest to find happy hair she was not as successful as she thought. "I got tired of using products that made my hair look good but then caused dryness and breakage a few weeks later," she says. In May 2003 Davis started Kinky-Curly, a line of hair products for any man or woman with thick, curly or frizzy hair. Starting out as strictly e-commerce Davis is proud of the fact that she now has about 50 store locations across the US, Canada and the Caribbean and is excited to have two of her products listed on Essence Magazine's beauty bestsellers list." Davis strives to live healthy lifestyle and incorporates this habit into her products. "We use all natural ingredients and not just a drop or two for the sake of the label. [This] can actually make a difference in the health of your hair," she explains. Using her own products to keep her hair healthy, Davis uses the help of her husband for her physical and mental health. "Craig is a health and nutrition expert, he is very much into juicing and raw foods. He plans the meals and food choices for our family. We do an internal cleanse/fast four times a year and pliates and prayer keeps me physically and mentally in shape," says the mother of two. As a successful business owner Davis has sound advice for budding entrepreneurs. "Research your field, make sure you have enough start up capital (keep your day job if possible) and realize that when you work for yourself you put in many more hours that working for an employer. I highly recommend the book Secrets of the Millionaire Mind by T Harv Eker. It is an excellent book that will help program your mind for success." Davis also encourages everyone to pursue their dreams and never live life with fear and regrets. "When you hold on to fear you never live life to the fullest."
