Can ordinary people jumpstart their local economy?
Ei AlfaIt is officially fall and now it is not only time for football and apple-picking, but it also means that is almost Global Entrepreneurship Week! Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW) 2010 takes place  November 15-21, and for the 3rd year, Rising Tide Capital is coodinating with local partners to spearhead the celebration of the Week in our part of the world. Our goal? To jumpstart our local economy and unleash the entrepreneurial energy of our city and the surrounding areas. Learn more about what we are doing by visiting our special website for GEW in Jersey City.

Even if you are geographically far, we invite you to follow our progress by following our news alerts on Twitter (click here now to see what I mean) and checking out the Facebook fan page to keep abreast of all the exciting news!

It seems simple, but it means a GREAT deal. By a simple click of a button you can create a momentum that can inspire our team, volunteers, interns and partners to do extraordinary things - particularly during this tough time. If you take an extra minute to let all your friends know about what we are doing, then even better!

Also, this year, we are particularly happy to coordinate with a new local initiative called Make My City, where dozens of small, mostly independent businesses will offer discounts and fun events throughout the Week. We will be supporting their effort by launching an exciting "Buy Local" Pledge that aims to make the holiday shopping season full of blessings for our future job creators. More news to come soon...

Wish you could do the same in your locality? Let us know by commenting on our facebook page. The come back story of the economy will depend on what ordinary people choose to do to support their economy in their own special ways. We are grateful that the national founders and sponsors of the Week are giving us the platform express our ideas and convictions in action.

Thank you!
Alfa Demmellash
CEO of Rising Tide Capital

Sal Austin Wins much more than an iPad

Program Associate Mary J. Sansait presents Sal with his prize.

Sal Austin
Over the summer Rising Tide Capital (RTC) completed not one, but two outcomes management projects. Entrepreneurs who participated in the surveys for these projects were entered for a chance to win an iPad. Sal Austin, co-founder and Senior Vice President of DGX, LLC, a security and technology firm, has won this prize.

Since Sal graduated from the Community Business Academy in 2009, he has become an ambassador of sorts for Rising Tide Capital. "I am happy to tell anybody that Rising Tide Capital helped me to restructure my business and make it profitable," he said. During Global Entrepreneurship Week 2009, Sal addressed City Hall as an RTC graduate. In 2009 he was also one of four entrepreneurs across the nation, selected for to appear in a video for the Association of Enterprise Opportunity, the national microenterprise development organization. RTC Completes Summer Outcomes Management Projects
And the news is Great!

During the summer of 2010, Rising Tide Capital (RTC) used several outcome measurement tools as a means to evaluate the impact of their programming in the community. Several weeks later, the data has been evaluated and solid statistical information shows the impact of RTC's programming.

The average client continues to be a 39-year old single mother with two children earning about $33,000 a year. Of the 85% of RTC clients who do not have existing businesses prior to starting RTC's programs, 36% launch start-ups within one year. Within one year of graduating from the Community Business Academy,  RTC entrepreneurs experience an increase in business revenue of 80%, and a corresponding increase in household income by 14%. Inspiring Malhar!
Malhar ShahOver the summer Pace University MBA student Malhar Shah interned with Rising Tide Capital (RTC) straddling the Programs, Communications and Outcomes Management departments. His internship was underwritten by the Wilson Center for Social Entrepreneurship at Pace University, an organization that seeks to promote social change through entrepreneurship by serving students and non-profit organizations.

Recently, Malhar contacted us to let us know that since his internship at RTC ended, he has been hired by the Wilson Center.  "Of the 18 great interns we had this summer, his work and attitude were particularly impressive, and exactly what we needed this semester to kick-start our web-marketing for continuing education," said Dr. Rebecca Tekula, Executive Director of the Wilson Center in an email to Jay.
