Gillian's Healthy Food Mission
Growing up in a family where nursing is the prominent profession, it seemed natural that Gillian Allen would follow in her family's footsteps. However, Gillian, who says "medicine is not my thing," decided not to take that route, and after 20 years of continuing her education and working in the corporate world, she has finally found her niche. "I saw an article (about Rising Tide Capital) in the Jersey City Reporter about a year before I took the class, signed up for the orientation but never made it." She had no idea what business endeavor she was interested in when she first called. A year after, Gillian had identified a problem plaguing her local community, Ward F of Jersey City. Residents wishing to access "high quality, local and organic food at a reasonable price" had to drive outside of the area to do so. Gillian, along with some other members of her community, decided to start a food co-op. Shortly thereafter, Gillian realized she didn't have the business knowledge to start and grow the enterprise. That's when she decided to give Rising Tide Capital a call againand was accepted into the Community Business Academy. She completed the 11-week course in August 2009, and is now well on her way to helping bring high quality, locally grown food, at affordable prices to Jersey City. "Rising Tide Capital has helped tremendously! This would've been a less focused undertaking without coming here. They really show you how a business works. Everyone is so helpful; I am very grateful for RTC." Gillian's organization, The Jersey City Food Co-op Initiative, just gained 14 new members, as well as financial support from local organizations. Alfa Demmellash Keynote Speaker at Women's History Month Empowerment Seminar In honor of Women's History Month, CEO and co-founder of Rising Tide Capital, Alfa Demmellash, was a keynote speaker at the 15th Annual Women's History Month Empowerment Seminar, held at the Elizabeth I. Kellogg Conference Center at Union County College in Elizabeth, NJ.
Demmellash told the women in the audience, "Many struggle still in isolation against tremendous barriers--made even worse by self-doubt. However, these are historic times for women. Over 26 million jobs and 3 trillion dollars in economic impact are created by women business owners. We are changing the world from inside out--from our homes to the wider community. Women need to embrace this truth. Know you can start a business, a non-profit, or pursue your dreams in other ways and have a tremendous impact on the world around you. And as long as you are tenacious, unrelenting and reach out to the resources around you -you will succeed." |
