Beatrice's Brand Excitement

Beatrice

Beatrice Johnston officially registered her company in Hudson County on January 8 2010, the day after she graduated from the Community Business Academy. Her business, Brand Excitement, offers affordable brand identity and support, social media set up and maintenance, web site design, and project based consulting solutions to small businesses and solo entrepreneurs. Less than three months later, she has two major projects, as well as three contracts for monthly services.

After 10 years of experience in the branding and design industry, Beatrice finally feels that she has the tools to be profitable in her own business, and is "super excited" at the success she has been able to achieve.  She credits her experience at Rising Tide Capital's Community Business Academy with the success of her business so far.  "I realized that my prior ventures were not profitable because I was not charging enough," she said. "My class assignments made me think about what services I could offer that people would pay for; how I could develop a suite of products that would meet potential clients' needs in a different way."

"I know branding, I am very skilled at what I do," she said. "The missing link for me was not knowing how to make my own business profitable or sustainable. Rising Tide Capital and the Community Business Academy provided a turning point for me. I feel like I've learned how to do business for my business."

Attention RTC Graduates

Are you interested in mentoring college-bound students?

This is your opportunity to pay it forward! We've been approached by the local College Preparatory Incentive Program, an organization that works with high school students on their college readiness, to find inspiring speakers who can motivate 9-12th graders interested in attending college. We believe local entrepreneurs can be powerful community role models and this is why we are creating a Speakers' Bureau of our entrepreneurs who want to share their personal journeys with these students.

For more information or to volunteer as a speaker, call Esther at 201-432-4316.

Community Business Academy Update

Newest Entrepreneurs

In one of our busiest recruitment seasons ever, 144 potential entrepreneurs recently attended four orientation sessions. This season represents our largest class to date, 66 aspiring CEOs were accepted into the spring edition of the Community Business Academy.

Some of the business ideas in this latest round of classes include a music producer, a mobile food vendor, the producer of a children's TV show, an ambulette service, and the future CEO of a women's green job training center.

Congratulations to all of our newest entrepreneurs, and good luck as you begin your journey with us!

From Trimesters to Semesters

In 2010 we have moved to a semester system; we will be teaching three classes each in the spring and the fall, instead of two classes three times per year. In order to accommodate the third class this spring, we've added a new part time team member.

Rising Tide Capital welcomes Mitch Greene, our new Community Business Academy Instructor. Mitch has ten years of experience consulting with small businesses owners in the microfinance industry, most recently at our business lending partner GNBDC. We are very excited to have someone with his expertise and knowledge on board.

To further accommodate our expanded class offerings, we have also added a new class location. In addition to The Urban League of Hudson County and Capital One Journal Square, the Capital One branch at 201 Newark Avenue in downtown Jersey City has become our latest space partner, generously opening its doors to our entrepreneurs on Wednesday evenings.
