Arts Congress Convenes
February 8, 2008
by Dave Nordstrand
The Salinas Californian |
About 100 of Salinas' most creative citizens met Thursday to help generate and shape a vigorous future for the city's arts.
The Sherwood Hall event was the first-ever Salinas Arts Congress. "Congress" means a group convened for a common cause, and Thursday night, that cause was focused on finding a way to make Salinas more artistically friendly.
Citizens' ideas included:
A city-wide arts festival
Displaying art in vacant downtown buildings
A grant writer to get money to promote the arts in Salinas
A cultural arts center
An arts effort that is ethnically diverse and open to all.
Those and other goals added up to a blueprint for action, which will undergo refinement and planning at the next Salinas Arts Congress, set for March 17. "Tonight is great. This is the beginning of everything for us," said Trish Sullivan, who led the proceedings. Sullivan, a Salinas artist, is the organizer of the monthly First Fridays art walks in Salinas. "I see the Salinas Arts Congress as a way for everyone to have a voice," she said. The congress stems from the Mayor's Arts Groups, formed in 2007 after Mayor Dennis Donohue's first town hall meeting aimed at softening the city's mean-street image. Donohue sees the arts as one means of achieving that goal, and the time for action on the arts front is now, he said. "Salinas is at a tipping point for the arts," Donohue told the gathering. The reasons to pursue the arts are many, said Steve Hoffman, executive director of the National Steinbeck Center, because the arts provide more than a decorative component to city life. "The arts relate to quality of life for everyone in a community," Hoffman said. Reasons are as fundamental as the health of the business community, he said. Studies show, for example, that the arts are key to recruiting and retaining workers from outside an area, Hoffman said. The best and the brightest workers, in other words, are more drawn to cities with vibrant arts scenes. People attending art events spark the economy by spending money on drinks, food, parking and babysitting, as well as up-front costs such as theater tickets. Schoolchildren exposed to the arts on a regular basis have better test scores, too, Hoffman said. "The brain needs activity, and art makes us think," said Laurie Myers, a teacher and artist from Salinas. "Besides, the arts are fun, and we need more fun things to do in this city." Ed Avila, a professional photographer and painter from Salinas, said the city's new emphasis on the arts and the arts congress has stirred excitement. "Tonight's event has potential," Avila said. Rojelio Viramontez, a dancer from Salinas, said the congress had already provided a valuable service by its attention to the business realities of sustaining an arts community. "I expect to see real progress out of this congress," Viramontez said. |

Dear Arts Congress Member,
Thank you for your participation in the Salinas Arts Congress. Just like you, I am volunteering my time because I am committed to help create a public benefit arts organization vital to affect positive change in our community.
Our second meeting on March 17, 2008 was very successful: everyone involved offered valuable suggestions and many volunteered to begin work on various projects. A special thanks to the Spirit of Salinas Dancers - who really put us in the spirit!
You may review the results of our last meeting below. Please do take time to read and think about what we have accomplished so far, this way we can continue to make progress during the upcoming meeting.
An Arts Congress mission, executive committee and basic plan will be established during the April 21 Salinas Arts Congress. Don't miss this important community event in the Santa Lucia Room at Salinas Community Center, 7:00 PM.

You said Salinas needs an online calendar resource for Arts, Culture, and Events. A planning calendar (up to 2 years in advance) and an events calendar with access form local organizations to post events. Let's get started! |
At the second Salinas Arts Congress you demonstrated a dedication to dig in and get to work! Some of you volunteered to start right away. As we move toward our third meeting on April 21, I want everyone to be thinking about your best asset: your talents, and how you could share these with the Art Congress.
Be prepared to join a committee that is suited to what you would like to contribute to the community. And come to the meeting ready to work on our proposal and mission statement - remember, we can always update and revise later on - after all, the best plans are living documents, changing with the times!
Please tell your friends and help us to pass the word about what we are doing (there is a link to forward this e-mail at the bottom of the page) - we need the community to make this work!
See you there!
Sincerely,
Trish Triumpho Sullivan Artistas Unidos - Artists United
