Dear Gardening Friend,

Things are winding down outside as frost and colder temps settle in and plants begin to drift off into dormancy.

We are gradually heading that way ourselves, here at BGC, BUT FIRST - there are a few special events to celebrate:

Super Halloween steals this weekend! All pottery, bulbs, statuary, fall decor, and more will be offered to you with big savings. This is our last weekend for nursery stock, and it's 50% off! Read more about this weekend's specials below.

Celebrate the upcoming winter season with us on weekends in November. We are transforming the garden center into nature's winter wonderland with new products perfect for decorating your home and for gift giving. Something new at BGC is Country Market coffees. We'll be sampling them on our winter wonderland weekends. Come taste the delicious flavors that are unique to autumn.

Our Evening of Delights and End-of-Season Open House will be November 18 and 19. Mark your calendars because we hope you can make it to this special weekend.

Please note our new store hours for November. Beginning next week, we will be open Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays, and open by chance Tuesdays-Thursdays.

Happy Fall,

Tracy Hankwitz
BGC Store Manager

Frosty Duties

frosty lawn

Now that we've had a hard frost, there are a few remaining things to do in the garden:

Store Cannas, Callas, Dahlias & More

Remove foliage once it's been killed off by the frost, cutting back to about 1" from the bulb/tuber. Remove soil and allow to dry. Store each bulb in a paper bag. Place bags in a cardboard box and store in a dark, dry place around 40-50 degrees.

Bulbs and tubers can also be stored in vermiculite to keep them from drying out over the winter. Rotting can be a problem, but dusting sulfur can prevent this from happening. Be sure bulbs don't touch each other when storing.

Control Creeping Charlie

You may not be thinking much about weed control right now, but after the first hard frost is an ideal time to get creeping Charlie under control. An application of Fertilome's Weed Free Zone is very effective at this time.

Treat Peach Trees Now for Leaf Curl

If your peach trees looked like this . . .

         Peach leaf curl

. . . they had peach leaf curl. This is a fungal disease that overwinters in the tree bark and in dead foliage. Remove and destroy infected leaves. Treat them now with lime sulfur spray, applying to the entire tree and the ground around the tree.  Treat them again with another application in the spring as the buds begin to swell.

Be the first to respond correctly by email and win a BGC $5 gift certificate! Email us your response at burlingtongc@sbcglobal.net

Winner will be announced in the next BGC Garden Notes.
