Dear Gardening Friend,
Many of you ask if we are wrapping up for the season. The answer is 'not yet!' There are exciting things coming up that we hope you will be part of:
* This Saturday's Backyard Birding Talk with Belinda Abendschein. She is not only a birding expert, she is a talented artist as well. Her unique birdbaths and nature sketches will be here at BGC Saturday only. Be sure to take a minute to check out her website. All birding items will be 20% off (plus t-shirt discount) Saturday only. (Birdseed is not included in the sale).
* The 13 Days of Halloween! We are counting down the days to Halloween with daily specials. Each morning we will announce the deal of the day on our Facebook page. You can also see it on our website's homepage. If you can't make it in that day, you can still take advantage of the scary special by giving us a call. The scary savings begins on Wednesday, November 19.
* In early November, we will be turning the BGC into nature's winter wonderland. Be sure to stop by on November weekends to do some Christmas shopping. We'll be open Friday, Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays in November.
* Of course all of this leads up to our End-of-Season Celebration on November 18th & 19th. We have some fun things planned like . . . hmmmm, I think I'll wait til next week to share that with you.
Congrats to Diane Schaub Battisti who won last week's Facebook Friday Challenge. Of all the bulbs mentioned in last week's BGC Garden Notes, narcissus (daffodils) and hyacinths are named after a Greek god and goddess.
Get out there and enjoy the season,
Tracy Hankwitz,
BGC Store Manager

It's hard to believe that it's mid October already! As nature prepares for dormancy, here are a few things that Walt(BGC owner) recommends you do to prepare for next year:
* Move plants in that will be overwintering indoors. Treat them with a systemic insecticide now and again in mid December.
* Spray gardens with lime sulfur to prevent diseases from overwintering. This is a great tips if any veggies or flowers had leaf diseases this year.
* Wrap young trees with plastic tree wrap to discourage critters from stripping the bark during the winter.
* Late October is the best time to fertilize the lawn. Use Milorganite , a slow-release fertilizer which will remain in the frozen soil over winter. It will be available for the grass to use early next spring.
* Clean debris from the vegetable gardens to prevent diseases from overwintering.
* If Japanese beetles were eating your trees and shrubs, now is the time to act. Protect your trees and shrubs for 12 months with an application of Fertilome's Tree & Shrub Systemic Insect Drench.

Fritillarias - The Exotic Queen of Bulbs
Here is something unique and strikingly exotic for your garden.
This Lutea Yellow Fritillaria rises like the sun above your other plants (32-40" tall)! Its tufts of leaves sit atop its down-turned nodding bell-shaped flowers of clear yellow. Truly stately in the garden, these bulbs remain untouched by four-legged critters and some claim they even help keep them away from surrounding plants. Plant this bulb in the fall for spring flowers.
Now this is garden art! Fritillaria persica is an heirloom bulb that has 7-30 dark, plum-purple nodding bell-shaped flowers on stems that range from 2-4' tall. Combined with bright green pineapple-like leaves, it is quite striking in the garden.
Please note that as beautiful as fritillarias are, they have one flaw - they have a skunk-like fragrance. So don't stick your nose in them :)
