Dear Gardening Friend,
If you spend anytime watching and feeding the birds, I encourage you to attend next Saturday's class at BGC. Belinda Abenschein is our guest speaker and is passionate about backyard birding. She is very knowledgeable, so bring your questions and learn something new about attracting birds to your yard. An hour of your time will be so worth it. You may just catch some of Belinda's enthusiasm! Remember, next Saturday, October 15 at 10 AM - and it's free!
What is fall without pumpkins? I love to decorate with them, inside and outside of the house. But the idea of gutting, cleaning, and carving a huge pumpkin isn't appealing to me anymore. So I found some creative ways to use them for unique fall decor. Click here to be inspired. Who knew pumpkins could be so fun!
I think we all appreciate the weather this week, especially after enduring last week's rainy streak. Many of you are planting, working on the lawn, raking, digging up dahlias, and out soaking up the sun. Watch next week's "Garden Notes" for tips on putting your garden to bed for the winter.
And finally, this week we have our first Facebook Friday Challenge. Join in on the fun before next Friday, and you may win yourself something. Find out what and how here. Good luck!
Happy Fall,
Tracy Hankwitz,
BGC Store Manager

Creepy Crawlies
They're baaaack!
Those creepy boxelder bugs and lady beetles are crawling in mass on the sunny sides of houses, sheds, and other buildings. We usually see them do this on warm days in late fall. They know cold weather is coming and are looking for a warm place to spend the winter. The most effective remedy is to spray them (and the outside of your house) with Hi-Yield 38 Plus which contains 38% permethrin, a synthetic insecticide. Triple Action Plus works well as an organic option.

Deer-Resistant Bulbs
Star of Persia Allium
Imagine it's spring. The bulbs you planted last fall are up and full of buds ready to burst open with color. You've been waiting for this all winter. The next time you check on them, the flowers have been eaten off! Most likely the culprits were deer. Many of us have to deal with this munchin' bunch and here is way to outsmart them: plant bulbs that they don't like! Below is a list of bulbs that deer tend to stay away from:
Alliums - so many alliums, so little time-
there are over 500 different species!
Daffodils - bright & cheerful daffadowndillies
Crocus -first ones up in the spring
Hyacinths - mmmmm, they smell so good!
Scillas - a spreading sea of blue,
plant them anywhere - even in the lawn
Fritallarias - more about these exotic beauties next week
Don't let the deer take the fun out of gardening. Plant some of these bulbs today to enjoy next spring.
