Dear Gardening Friend,

It's a bit soggy out in the garden, but all this rain has been good for helping our woody plants prepare for the upcoming winter.

As the leaves dance their way to the ground below, remember they make a terrific mulch and are easy to compost. Any diseased leaves should be raked up, bagged or burned.

Walt says that the window for overseeding and renovating the lawn is quickly closing - try to finish by October 15. Fertilizing the lawn now is smart because the rains have leached any remaining nutrients out of the root zone. His recommendation is to apply Milorganite by the end of October.

The pumpkins are here, and boy, are they nice! Big ones perfect for carving or scripting on.

         Fall

We also have a wonderful selection of specialty pumpkins, gourds, and squash grown by Shelley Bisch and her family on their farm in Evansville near Madison. You just have to stop in and see how amazing they are.  Fall is here - let's get decorating and enjoy the season!

Happy Fall!

Dig. Drop.Done

It's that easy - really! A few minutes spent in the garden this fall will reward you with beautiful flowers next spring. Our collection of bulbs this year includes everyone's favorite tulips and daffodils plus new exciting varieties of alliums, daffodils and tulips.

New in this week:

Paperwhite Narcissus

lovely white fragrant daffodils

oh-so-easy to force indoors with water and no soil!

Plant a few for the upcoming holidays.

Paperwhites

this week's favorite:

Double Tulip 'Black Hero'

The hero doesn't always wear white.  This one wears black - actually velvety maroon that appears to be almost black. 'Black Hero' is a double late-flowering tulip that resembles a peony with it's full head of petals.  Growing 24-26" tall, Black Hero grows best in full sun to part shade. Plant them where you are sure to enjoy and appreciate the drama they bring to the garden.
