Dear Gardening Friend,

September is a busy time for gardeners. As cooler weather settles in, our energy levels are renewed which is a good thing - there is lots to do.

It's the perfect time to . . .

. . . spruce up the lawn. Grass seed sown now will germinate better, won't have to compete with weeds, and will have fall and spring to mature before facing the stress of summer.

. . . fertilize the lawn. A slow-release fertilizer like Milorganite will be ready to give you a nice green up next spring if applied in the fall.

. . . plant Cooler temps, warm soil, and a short watering season make fall the preferred time to plant. Keep them watered and use a root stimulator to help the feeder roots get established.

. . . shop our 40% off sale on trees, shrubs, perennials, evergreens, and herbs.

. . . feed the birds. Many of them are beginning their fall migration and need extra energy to make the long flight. Keep feeders full of nectar for the hummers, seed and suet for other birds. BTW - did you know that hummers are carnivores? Their diet consists of mostly insects, but they need nectar to fuel their fly-catching activities.

. . . plan ahead for spring and plant bulbs. We expect them in any day now and are excited about the new varieties we will have for you to plant in your yard. More about that next week.

Enjoy your holiday weekend,

Sky Cafe  -

       Innovative Squirrel-proof Feeder

 Sky Cafe

When squirrels approach the Sky Cafe from above, it's angled rim sends them slip-sliding off the feeder and prevents them from hanging down to reach the seed. Watch for yourself.

The large, see-through hopper holds about 10 lbs. of seed and the wide seed tray has plenty of room for larger birds like cardinals and grosbeaks to perch and feed.

If you don't need a new feeder, the Sky Cafe baffles are available here at BGC as well.

CottonBurr Compost

Move over mushroom compost - there's a new kid in town. Actually we have been using and recommending cottonburr compost for a few years now. It continues to be a favorite with perennial gardeners. Once you use it, you will be back for more.

CottonBurr Compost is made of cotton burrs from the cotton plants grown in Texas. The cotton burr is important because it is the primary place where nutrients are stored. It contains a significant amount of NPK as well as macro and micronutrients.

Here are some other fun facts:

     * cotton burrs don't tie up nitrogen as they break down

     * cotton burrs contain protein which is an excellent food source for beneficial soil organisms.

     * cotton burr compost loosens tight, clay soils

     * it accepts and retains water easily

     * It helps to neutralize high pH soils

The best part about cotton burr compost? It's easy to spread and has a real natural look. As a soil amendment, spread a 2-3" layer over the area, till in to a depth of 6" and water thoroughly.

As a mulch, spread it at least 1" thick over the soil.
