Summertime Blues
Eddie Cochran sang "there ain't no cure for the summertime blues" back in the 1950's. But we have a cure . . . actually three remedies with beautiful blue foliage to add to your garden for some real summertime blues:
Dallas Blues

This switchgrass (Panicum virgatum 'Dallas Blues') has a wide blue blade, grows 4-5 feet tall, and in the fall has beautiful clouds of reddish-purple flower plumes. The birds love the tiny seeds as they forage for food in the cold weather. In winter the stems stay upright under the weight of snow adding a fourth season of interest.
Fothergilla 'Blue Shadow'
Here's one for a part-shady spot. The blue foliage of 'Blue Shadow' is only one of several great attributes this shrub has. In spring look for honey-scented, white bottle-brush flowers and fall brings an brilliant show of red, orange and yellow foliage. 'Blue Shadow' grows best in moist, acidic soil (add some peat to the planting hole) and will reach 4-5 feet in height in about 10 years.
Blue Fescue

Looking for smaller blues? Blue fescue (Festuca glauca) is an ornamental grass that grows in a soft mound reaching 12 inches when flowering. It grows well in sun or shade along a path where it softens edges with it's wispy habit.
DESIGN TIP: Pair blue foliage plants with silver and burgandy colored foliage.

Grilling Corn on the Cob
Mmmmmm - tis the season for corn on the cob. Here are a few grillin' and flavorin' suggestions:
Grillin' with husks on - try this tip and you'll never boil sweet corn again! Loosen husks, remove silks, spread the kernels with butter, pull the husks back over the ear. Grill over high heat for about 10 min. Then peel the husks back (be sure to wear leather gloves when handling hot corn); brush kernels with olive oil and grill for another 10 min rotating as the kernels turn golden.
Flavorin'
Herb Butter - brush with herb butter made of fresh parsley, thyme, chives and rosemary.
Mexican Twist - spread with mayo, roll in grated parmesan cheese, dust with chili powder
Smokey Flavor - blend soft butter with diced chipotle peppers in adobo sauce and brush on the corn; sprinkle with fresh lime zest.
