Dear Gardening Friend, What beautiful weather we've had this week. Cooler nights and less humid days remind me that fall is not that far off. I'm not trying to rush the seasons, but it's much easier to change our store decor over to fall and Halloween when it's not hot and humid. New arrivals have been coming in - fall decorations, creepy Halloween statuary, and we expect our first shipment of mums next week. Other newcomers to BGC are baby succulents - oh so adorable! If you aren't a fan yet of these low-maintenance little pieces of art, I think you will fall for them once you see the unique beauty they offer and the low care they demand. We have them available in 6-packs right now and soon will have them for sale in 4" pots. We have also been busy unpacking boxes of new bird feeders and heated birdbaths. So stop in and see what's new, rummage through our garden treasure sale, and pick up some plants in our Summer's End Sale. (Be sure to bring the coupon and please note this does not include our fall annuals or succulents).
Enjoy!

The August Flower Garden
Take a look at your flower gardens this month and you may find that the blossom count is a little low. Here are eight plants that bloom from August into the fall:
Asters
Ornamental Grasses
Rudbeckia (Black-Eyed Susan)
Echinacea (Purple Coneflower)
Helenium (Sneezeweed)

Helenium autumnale is often overlooked, but this native plant adds a splash of yellow color in the perennial border. Blooming in late summer into fall, it can grow to a height of 5 feet. It's common name, Sneezeweed, comes from its former use of its dried leaves in making snuff, inhaled to cause sneezing that would supposedly rid the body of evil spirits.
More trivial facts: Helenium autumnale's other common name is 'Helen's Flower'. It's believed that the genus Helenium was named after Helen of Troy and these flowers sprung up from the ground where her tears fell. Awe - isn't that a great story?
Sedum
Solidago (Golden Rod)
Seven-Sons

Seven-Sons Flowers (Heptacodium miconiodes) is a beautiful multi-stemmed shrub or small tree that has many wonderful traits. Beginning in August, white buds form opening with the fragrance of sweet jasmine. In fall, the flower stems turn bright red until the first hard frost. In winter, the bark exfoliates to reveal attractive brown bark. Three-season interest - this is one to definitely add to your shopping list.
Last year our Seven-sons planted here at BGC by the pond was covered with butterflies! What a sight that was! This shrub grows best in full sun to dappled shade and can grow to be 20 feet tall. Here's some trivia: Seven-sons is so named because each flower stalk has seven flowers.

To Scrub or Not to Scrub . . .
. . . that is the question. As you gather vegetables from your garden, most are covered with soil that needs to be removed. Did you know that 50% of vitamins in vegetables are located in the peel? This is lost if you use a peeler or a harsh brush.
Try the new Skrub'a gloves - a Danish scrubbing glove that makes it easy to clean vegetables, fruit, and other food without removing all the healthy vitamins. Use them on potatoes, carrots, beets, parsnips and more. Kids like to use them, too!
