Buttonbush

     Buttonbush

Buttonbush (Cephalanthus occidentalis) is another butterfly magnet. Last summer several BGC friends came in having just been out at Bong's butterfly exhibit raving about a bush with small puff balls flowers that was covered with butterflies. Turns out it was the buttonbush.

Buttonbush is an easy shrub to grow if planted in the right spot. It loves to have wet feet, grows well in full sun to part shade, and is a fast grower (up to 12 feet)- so give it some room. The button-like flowers appear in late summer and persist into the fall. This native is a nectar source for some butterflies and the birds like it,too.

Digging Garlic

 Garlic harvest

Next to fresh tomatoes from the garden, the delicious flavor that home-grown garlic brings to the table is hard to beat. Whether you planted it last fall or this spring, it's time to harvest.

Garlic can be dug once the green stems begin to turn brown at the base. Carefully lift them with a garden fork and gently remove soil from the roots. The bulbs need to be cured for 2-4 weeks in a dry, well-ventilated area out of direct sun. Once cured, save some garlic to plant again and savor the rest in the kitchen.

If the bulbs are small, perhaps they were planted too close together or harvested too early. Small bulbs can also result if the scapes (flowering stalks on hardneck varieties) were not removed in mid June.

TIPS: Fall is the best time to plant garlic, and never store garlic in the frig.

Rainforest Sprinklers

   Rainforest sprinkler

We love the Rainforest sprinkler because of its fine mist that is gentle on plants, its adjustable coverage (20 sq ft to 1900 sq ft), it works on low pressure and is perfect for well systems. It uses 1/3 less water than most other sprinklers. Watch the video here and pick one up at BGC today.
