Mission As Business Guide
This past year we took to heart the advice we frequently offer to clients - when in doubt, go to your mission statement first. If that is your primary "filter" for all vexing questions, it can bring great clarity to your ultimate decision and direction. After reflecting on our mission and what we truly want to accomplish, we took a number of steps this year to expand our services and help nonprofits become truly exceptional organizations.
The mission of Olive Grove Consulting is "fostering strong, productive, and sustainable leaders and organizations." Every client project we choose and partner we engage supports that mission. We wanted to share some of those exciting projects and partnerships with you, to give you a flavor of the diversity of the clients we serve, and to alert you to the comprehensive services we offer to help nonprofits have an even bigger impact in our community.
One of the most exciting partnerships we have formed is with DHR International, a "Top 5" international search firm. As the Executive Vice President of the Nonprofit Practice with responsibility for the Western Region, Emily Hall can leverage the extensive resources and expertise of this industry-leading practice to recruit truly exceptional senior leadership for nonprofits. We also can work with JobPlex, another business division of DHR, for recruiting mid-level directors. This international platform complements Emily's in-depth understanding of our unique region and the incredible diversity of our area.
While all of our transitions and search work is now in partnership with DHR, Olive Grove Consulting continues to offer strategy, governance, and leadership consulting to nonprofits in Northern California and nationally. Olive Grove has grown substantially in the past year, with new offices and additional consultant and staff resources to continue our track record in exceptional customer service, customized approaches, and the highest quality work.
In addition to specific consulting projects, we commissioned a study on foundation perceptions of leadership change, developed strategy curriculum for emerging leaders, presented workshops on succession planning, participated in national conferences, and provided ongoing leadership coaching support for a number of our clients. This year we will continue to be thought leaders in the field through new research, increased publishing, a new blog, and interviews with the most dynamic leaders in the sector.
We take our mission seriously, and we look forward to continuing our work with some of the most exceptional organizations and leaders in the industry. |

Peter Hero Joins DHR Nonprofit Practice
DHR International is pleased to announce that Peter Hero joins as consultant and Executive Vice President in the firm's Silicon Valley office and is a consulting member of DHR's Nonprofit Practice.
For 18 years Mr. Hero was the President of Community Foundation Silicon Valley (CFSV). In early 2007, he helped lead the merger of CFSV with a nearby community foundation, creating a new $1.7 billion entity, Silicon Valley Community Foundation, to which he is now Senior Advisor to the CEO until the end of 2008. At the merger CFSV had $1.1 billion in assets (compared to assets of just $7M when he began) and annual grants exceeding $100 million. Prior to this position, Mr. Hero was President of the Maine College of Art, a 4-year college of art and design.
Currently Mr. Hero is the founding Chairman of the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) Foundation and on the Board of Directors of the Skoll Foundation, eBay Foundation, PBS, Stanford University's Haas Center for Public Service, the American India Foundation, and in 2004 he was appointed a Synergos Foundation Global Fellow. He currently chairs the World Bank Advisory Committee on global community foundation development.
For more than a decade Mr. Hero has been working internationally, particularly in Central and Eastern Europe, where he is helping to create a regional network of community foundations. Czech Republic President Vaclav Havel appointed him to the 2002 NATO Summit Council of Advisors in Prague.
Mr. Hero holds an M.B.A. from Stanford University School of Business, an M.A. (With Distinction) in Art History from Williams College, and (Honorary) Doctor of Laws from the Maine College of Art.
