| Wachtel Cancer Center Recognized for Excellence | |
The Michael D. Wachtel Cancer Center at Mercy Medical Center has received an Outstanding Achievement Award from the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons; one of only seven Wisconsin hospitals and the only Fox Valley region cancer center honored this year. To be eligible for the award, cancer centers must demonstrate the highest level of compliance with seven standards representing six areas of cancer program activity including cancer committee leadership, cancer data management, clinical management, research, community outreach and quality improvement. Additionally, the center must receive a compliance rating for the remaining 29 cancer program standards. Congratulations to the Michael D. Wachtel Cancer Center team! This is Personalized Care. |

| Megan Shippee Earns Volunteer Scholarship | |
Mercy Medical Center student volunteer Megan Shippee is the winner of the 2012 Natalie Kate Bolin Student Volunteer Scholarship award. The annual $500 scholarship award was established through Mercy Health Foundation in remembrance of Natalie Kate Bolin, a previous student volunteer, who passed away as the result of a car accident.
Megan is an Oshkosh West High School senior and a Mercy Medical Center volunteer in good standing with a total of 391 volunteer hours since she began volunteering in 2008. She has worked in errands and transport and especially appreciates the opportunity to work alongside health care professionals and fellow volunteers. Megan is currently taking classes to obtain her CNA certification and plans to attend Fox Valley Technical College in the fall before going on to UW-Madison. Her long term goal is to attend medical school and become a cardiologist.
The Natalie Kate Bolin Student Volunteer Scholarship Award will be presented to Megan by Natalie's mother, Mary Jo Menzies, and her sisters at the Oshkosh West High School awards program on May 21.

| Cancer Survivor Praises PEACE Program | |
Bill Polzin, 69, of Oshkosh, is a two-time survivor of esophageal cancer. After being cancer free for over five years, it returned last May, making another round of chemotherapy and radiation treatment in the Michael D. Wachtel Cancer Center necessary. As a result, he lost a lot of muscle strength and was extremely fatigued. When the new "People Exercising After Cancer Enters Their Life" (PEACE) exercise program started last December, Bill was one of the first to give it a try. In January, he sent a thank you to Mercy Health Foundation for funding the program.
Bill said, "I am writing you today to tell you how extremely grateful I am for the PEACE program and the wonderful lady, Donna Chaltry, who runs it. In just these few weeks I have learned strengthening exercises and have been able to work out at Mercy for free. I'm already feeling so much better. I hope that many other cancer survivors will take advantage of this program. God Bless the folks who made the PEACE program possible." |
| National Health Care Decisions Day--Every Day | |
You may have missed National Health Care Decisions Day on Monday, April 16, but any day is a good day to create your advance directive for health care. This is a legal document that tells health care providers who you wish to make medical decisions for you if you become incapacitated and what treatments you would or would not want. Advance directives are relatively easy to develop and can be done without a lawyer and without cost. Forms are available at Affinity Health System clinics and hospitals. Protect your right to make your own health care decisions even if you cannot communicate your wishes at a future date. |
