Thank you!
2009 has been a challenging year in so many ways for so many people; yet our donors have come through once again to support the work of Mercy Health Foundation. Your gifts will be used as you directed to support projects you care about within Mercy Medical Center and in the community. Read more about how your generosity impacts the health care available at Mercy and in the Oshkosh area in this edition of Giving News. |
| MercyStrong Event Supports Heart Services |
|
Mercy Health Foundation donors came together and donated over $140,000 to support technology advancement at Mercy Medical Center and community outreach services at the foundation's first annual MercyStrong event. Affinity Health System CEO Dan Neufelder, Mercy President Bill Calhoun and Wayne Trembly, chairperson of the Mercy Health Foundation Board of Trustees, hosted the September 25 event held at The Waters in Oshkosh.
Mercy Strong's primary focus for 2009 and 2010 is on heart and vascular services at Mercy. The existing heart catheterization lab is reaching the end of its lifespan and an advanced 64-slice CT scanner is needed to enhance diagnostic services for heart, stroke, trauma and other major illnesses. Mercy Strong will also help the Foundation meet its annual community health outreach commitments to support the Living Healthy Community Clinic for the uninsured in Oshkosh, the Tri County Community Dental Clinic and the Fitness for the Physically Challenged Program in the Rehabilitation Department at Mercy. Many, many thanks to all who have supported this good work to Save Lives, Give Hope and Build Healthier Communities.
 Loren Swanson, DDS, and his
wife Judy were special guests at the MercyStrong event. They shared their story of Loren's
journey through diagnosis,
treatment and rehabilitation
from heart disease. Judy told
guests, "I shudder to think of the
heartache I would be feeling today, if we had not had Mercy
and especially the cath lab when
we needed it. For to me, this wonderful facility and staff not only healed Loren's heart, but mine as well." |
| Mercy to Add CO2 Monitors |
|
A grant of $15,750 from Mercy Health Foundation will make it possible to purchase three End-tidal CO2 monitors for post-surgical patients. According to Caroline Alterman, clinical development specialist at Mercy, research has proven carbon dioxide levels to be a strong, early indicator of respiratory distress--even before oxygen levels change. This type of monitoring is especially important for patients at high risk of respiratory problems while receiving powerful narcotics to reduce pain after surgery, such as the elderly. The monitors are portable so they can easily be moved to patients with the most need. |
| Memory Boxes Comfort Families |
|

The loss of a loved one is very traumatic and emotional, but organ and tissue donation brings a degree of comfort to some. "Donation can generate something positive in an otherwise tragic situation," according to Dawn Auclair, RN, who has been working with donor families at Mercy Medical Center since 1992. Dawn is a night hospital coordinator at Mercy and serves as the liaison for the University of Wisconsin Organ Procurement Organization. She works with ICU nursing staff and multiple other hospital departments to coordinate organ donation cases. Dawn is available to assist staff with approaching family members to make the request and explain the donation process. She sees herself as a family advocate, trying to ease their stress and keep them informed throughout the process. Donation procedures can take from a few hours to a few days. To help families through this difficult time, Dawn has developed a memory kit program. The tastefully decorated memory kits are a tangible way to honor organ and tissue donors as well as help staff better connect with the families. Read More |
| LHCC Benefits from J.J. Keller Grant |
|
The J.J. Keller Foundation Fund of the Oshkosh Area Community Foundation has awarded a grant of $25,000 to Mercy Health Foundation for the Living Healthy Community Clinic for low income, uninsured residents of Winnebago County. The funding will be used for general operating expenses. The LHCC provides primary care health services using a nurse practitioner model of care. It is supported by a coalition of local organizations including the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh College of Nursing, Winnebago County, Mercy Health Foundation, Mercy Medical Center, Aurora Health Care, ThedaCare and the Oshkosh Area United way.
As of June 30, 2009, the LHCC had a caseload of 573 patients, 277 of whom had household incomes of under $1,000 per month-- regardless of the number of people in the household. Nearly 29 percent of the caseload is new since the first of the year. |
