Hilchos Sukkah

1090. The proper way to fulfill the mitzvah of Sukkah is for one to "eat, drink, sleep, relax, talk with friends, and live in the Sukkah for seven days, day and night, in the same way as one lives in his house the rest of the year." {There are exceptions to this, which we will discuss} Shulchan Aruch w/Mishnah Berurah 639:1

1091. One who adds in the fulfillment of this Mitzvah (i.e. spends more time in the Sukkah) will have added beracha from Heaven. Therefore, one should build the Sukkah in a manner, and in a location which will be most conducive to be able to spend as much time as possible in the Sukkah without being disturbed by cold, bees and other common problems (e.g. install a heater, bee-trap etc.). Piskei Tshuvos 639:1

1092. Inasmuch as the holiness of the Sukkah is very great, one should limit discussions in the Sukkah as much as possible to words of Torah and other proper topics befitting the Sukkah. Certainly one should be careful to avoid speaking any Loshon Hora, Rechilus, or other prohibited speech in the Sukkah. Shulchan Aruch w/Mishnah Berurah 639:1

1093. One should bring all the nicest dishes, silverware, and serving pieces into the Sukkah, but leave pots and other kitchen utensils in the house, just as one would normally behave in one's dining room on Shabbos or Yom Tov. Shulchan Aruch w/Mishnah Berurah 639:1

1094. One may not shame the Sukkah by using it as a shortcut, spitting, hanging clothes to dry, or any other behavior that one would not do in one's Dining Room or Living Room. Nevertheless, it is permitted for one to wash Netilas Yadayim upon waking up in the morning. However, the used water should be removed from the Sukkah promptly. Shulchan Aruch w/Mishnah Berurah 639:1, Piskei Tshuvos 639:3,4, Sukkas Sholaim 39:7

1095. According to some opinions, one should not bring a non-jew into the Sukkah unless one first covers the Schach (with an awning or other method) so that the Sukkah is not Kosher at that time. S'U Divrei Yatziv OC2:274:3, Shach Al Hatorah Par. Emor, Medrash Pinchas (M'Koritz), Piskei Tshuvos 639:3

1096. If one is unable to sleep in the Sukkah due to cold weather, one is not obligated to do so, and one is not obligated to take extreme measures to create a warm Sukkah to enable himself to sleep in the Sukkah. Shulchan Aruch w/Mishnah Berurah 639:2, Moadim U'zmanim 8:Hashmotos to Chelek2:107

1097. Nevertheless, since "one who removes himself from the Mitzvah of Sukkah - his punishment is great"; and nowadays one can easily install a heater to alleviate a moderately cold night, one should make the extra effort to do so, when and where possible. This was the custom of the Chofetz Chaim and R' Chaim Brisker. Piskei Tshuvos 639:7, Mishnah Berurah 639:MB31, S'U Min Hashomayim 11, Sukkah Hasholaim Miluim L'Perek25, Nimukei Orach Chaim 639

1098. One may not eat a K'beitzah (the size of an egg) of any Mezonos or Hamotzie food outside of a Sukkah. Shulchan Aruch w/Mishnah Berurah 639:2, Piskei Tshuvos 639:8

1099. One who is stringent upon himself (although permitted according to halacha) to avoid even drinking out of the Sukkah (and certainly eating non-mezonos snacks out of the Sukkah) is praiseworthy. Shulchan Aruch w/Mishnah Berurah 639:2

1100. One is permitted to eat foods which do not require a Hamotzie, Mezonos or Hagafen out of the Sukkah when those foods are not being eaten as part of a Hamotzie/Mezonos meal. Shulchan Aruch w/Mishnah Berurah 639:2 MB12,13, see Shaar Hatziyun 29

1101. However, since today it is common to eat meals which do not include any bread or other Mezonos items, many people are machmir (act stringently) and do not eat meals out of the Sukkah, even when those meals do not include Hamotzie or Mezonos foods. Piskei Tshuvos 639:9, Tshuvos V'Hanhagos 1:371

1102. If one is in middle of a meal in the Sukkah one should preferably not eat/drink even Shehakol, Ha'etz or Ha'adomoh foods/drinks out of the Sukkah because since it is in middle of a meal these foods cannot be considered "Achilas Ara'iy" - a snack. Shaar Hatziyun 29 @ SA 639:2, Piskei Tshuvos 639:12, Mikroai Kodesh 1:31, S'U Shoel Umaishiv 3:11

1103. Therefore, some are machmir (stringent) to avoid leaving the Sukkah during a meal with unswallowed  food or drink still in one's mouth although this is not prohibited according to halacha. Tshuvos Vehanhagos 2:305, Piskei Tshuvos 639:12

1104. Women are not obligated in the Mitzvah of Sukkah, (but are permitted to perform the mitzvah of eating in the Sukkah). Nevertheless, Ashkenazim generally, (and some Sefardim) have the custom to permit women to make the beracha of "Layshaiv Ba'sukkah". Shulchan Aruch w/Mishnah Berurah 640:1, Piskei Tshuvos 640:1

1105. However, Sefardim generally (and some Ashkenazim) have the custom to prohibit women from making a berecha of "Layshaiv Ba'sukkah". Piskei Tshuvos 640:1

1106. Parents of boys who 5 or 6 years old (depending on their maturity) are obligated to be Mechanech (train) them in the mitzvah of Sukkah and should not give them Hamotzie or Mezonos foods to eat out of the Sukkah (unless the parents determine that it is too cold for the child in the Sukkah). Shulchan Aruch w/Mishnah Berurah 640:2, Piskei Tshuvos 640:2 fn9

1107. Nevertheless, the custom today is that very young children do not sleep in the Sukkah in locations where it is cold at night. Piskei Tshuvos 640:2 fn9
