Hilchos Meah (100) Berachos

930. Men and boys who have reached the age of Chinuch (and according to a minority opinion, Women and girls) are obligated to make a minimum of 100 berachos every single day. Shulchan Aruch w/Mishnah Berurah 46:3, R' Ovadia Yosef in Halichos Olam Par. Vayeshev 80, R' Yosef Sholom Elayashiv in Yashiv Moshe

931. This obligation was originally established by Moshe Rabbeinu, but over the years was neglected, and then was reinstituted by Dovid Hamelech in response to a plague during his reign. Rabbeinu Bachai in Kad Hakemach 2, Chidah in S'U Yosef Ometz 50, Sefer Hamanhig 1

932. The obligation to make 100 berachos daily is based upon the Gemara (Mes. Menachos 43b) which states that during the reign of Dovid Hamelech 100 people were dying in Yerushalayim every day until Dovid Hamelech discerned through Ruach Hakodesh that it was necessary to institute the obligation for every individual to bless Hashem a minimum of 100 times each day, after which the plague ended.  Shulchan Aruch w/Mishnah Berurah 46:3, Midrash Rabbah Par. Korach 18:21, Tur 46

933. Dovid Hemelech based the obligation on the possuk in Parshas Eikev (Devarim 10:12) "Ve'attah Yisroel Moh Hashem Elokecha Shoel Mei'imach Ki Im L'Yirah Es Hashem Elokecha...." ("Now Israel what does Hashem your G-d ask of you? Only to fear Hashem your G-d"). The word "Moh" may be read as "Meah", meaning 100. The possuk then reads: "Now Israel 100 (berachos) does Hashem your G-d ask of you." Mes. Menachos 43b see Rashi

{The possuk subsequently has a total of 100 letters, and 26 words - equal to the name of Hashem Yud Hey Vov Hey}

934. The overwhelming majority of Rishonim consider the obligation to make 100 berachos each day to be a Rabbinical obligation (albeit based upon a possuk). However, there is a minority opinion that considers it to be biblical obligation. Rambam Sefer Hamitzvos Shoresh 1, Ramban, Chareidin 38:15, Sedei Chemed 8:34, Ba'al Halchos Gedolos Aseh:2, Hayerei'im 10

{The Ben Ish Chai (intro. Par. Balak) explains that although the nusach of the berachos we say today was composed by Ezra Hasofer and his Beis Din during the era of the 2nd Beis hamikdash; nevertheless, in earlier generations each person had the ability to praise and bless Hashem using his own words, thereby fulfilling the biblical obligation.}

935. One who recites more than the minimum of 100 berachos daily is praiseworthy. However, one must be careful not make berachos which are unnecessary according to halacha. Piskei Tshuvos 46:8, Avudraham, Rambam Hil. Bercahos 10:26, 11

936. According to the opinion of a majority of Poskim women and girls are not obligated to make 100 berachos daily inasmuch as many of the berachos enumerated by the earlier Poskim in the basic count of 100 are not applicable to women (i.e. Tefillin, Tzitzis, Maariv, etc.). Piskei Tshuvos 46:8, Halichos Shlomo 22:25, S'U Shevet Halevi 5:23, Halichos Shlomo 22:25, Tshuvos V'Hanhagos 2:129,

937. However, some Poskim who are in the minority (including R' Yosef Sholom Elyashiv and R' Ovadia Yosef) proffer that women are also obligated to make 100 berachos each day.
Piskei Tshuvos 46:8, Halichos Olam Par. Vayeshev 80, Sefer Yashiv Moshe

938. One who makes 100 berachos every day will find it easy to reach a proper level of Yiras Shomayim (Fear of Hashem). Maharsha Menachos 43b, Ben Yehoyada Menachos 43b, Sefer Mitzvas Meah Berachos intro.

939. Since "all that Hashem wants of us" is the 100 berachos (see Halacha #933) "this Mitzvah is very great and awesome with very deep meaning". Seder Hayom Seder Meah Berachos

940. The obligation to make 100 berachos daily begins at nightfall (Tzeis Hakochavim) and continues until nightfall the next day. Shulchan Aruch w/Mishnah Brurah 46:3, Siddur R' Yaakov Emden, Piskei Tshuvos 46:9

941. On a typical weekday one can fulfill the count of 100 berachos as follows;

1-5.    Five berachos of Shema in Maariv
6-24.  Nineteen berachos in Shmona Esrei of Maariv
25.     Hamapil when going to sleep
26-28. Netilas Yadayim, Asher Yatzar, Elokai Neshoma in the morning
29-43. Fifteen morning Berachos
44-46. Birchas Hatorah. (counts Veha'arev Noh as a beracha)
47-49. One beracha on Tzitzis/Tallis, 2 on Tefillin
50.      Mikadesh es Shimchah B'rabim (before Korbonos) {not mentioned in MB}
51-52. Boruch She'amar and Yishtabach
53-55. Three berachos of Shema at Shachris
56-74. Nineteen berachos of Shmona Esrei of Shachris
75-93. Nineteen berachos of Shmona Esrei of Mincha
94-95. Al Netilas Yadayim for 2 meals a day
96-97. Hamotzie Twice a day
98-105.   Four berachos of Bircas Hamazon twice a day
106-107. Hagafen on the Kos beracha after Bircas Hamazon twice a day
108-109. Al Hagefen after Kos beracha twice a day
Plus - any additional berachos before and after eating food outside of a bread meal, a 3rd bread meal, and berachos of Asher Yatzar after using the bathroom.
Shulchan Aruch w/Mishnah Brurah 46:3

942. If one davens Maariv before Tzeis Hakochavim (nightfall) the berachos of Shema and Maariv count for the day just completed, not the night/day coming. Therefore, if one davens Maariv one night before nightfall, and then davens Maariv the following day after nightfall, one will be missing 24 berachos. Piskei Tshuvos 46:9, Halichos Shlomo 1:22:23, S'U Btzail Hachochmah 4:155

943. R' Shloma Zalman Auerbach regularly counseled people in distress to strengthen themselves and to undertake to be very vigilant in the obligation to recite a minimum of 100 berachos daily as a remedy for their crisis. Halichos Shlomo 22:pg92

944. On Shabbos (and Yom Tov) the number of berachos in Shmona Esrei are greatly reduced from a total of 57 (3 x 19) to 28 (4 x 7 includes mussaf), a loss of 29 berachos. Additionally one is missing the 2 berachos on tefillin, and Hemelech Bichvodo in Maariv, resulting in a total of 32 missing berachos. Shulchan Aruch w/Mishnah Brurah 46:3, Piskei Tshuvos 46:9,10

945. These can be made up with three berachos of Kiddush (2 Friday night and 1 by day), 6 berachos of the 3rd Seudah (Netilas Yadayim, Hamotzie, 4 of Bircas Hamazon). These bring one's total to 83. One should then L'Chatchila add Asher Yatzar, and berachos on foods before and after to reach 100. Shulchan Aruch w/Mishnah Brurah 46:3, Piskei Tshuvos 46:9,10

946. L'chatchila one should recite the 100 berachos himself. Nevertheless, the berachos of Kiddush (and Havdalah, Megillah, Shofar, Kos shel Beracha) may also be relied upon L'chatchila for one's count of 100 even if one is only answering Amen to another's beracha because these berachos were established by Chazal as individual berachos that are regularly made in this fashion. Halichos Shlomo 1:22:23, Sefer Mitzvos 100 Berachos Kehilchasan 2:3
947. Bidieved one may rely upon the berachos made on the Torah and Haftorah adding an additional 27 berachos on Shabbos (14 from 7 olim at Shachris; 2 from Maftir; five from the Haftorah; and 6 at Mincha). Finally, if these are insufficient, or if one missed these berachos, one may Bidieved rely upon answering Amen to the berachos of the repetition of Shmona Esrei by the Shliach Tzibbur. Shulchan Aruch w/Mishnah Brurah 46:3

948. There are some Poskim who hold that if one makes an early Shabbos and davens Maariv before nighfall, the berachos of Shema and Shmona Esrei (as well as Kiddush and the Seudas Shabbos) count for Shabbos, and not for Friday. Likewise some Poskim hold that if one says Bircas Hamazon for the Seudah Shlishis after nightfall on Motzai Shabbos, the berachos count for Shabbos.S'U Yabia Omer 10:7, S'U Shraga Hameir 5:43, Piskei Tshuvos 46:9

949. However, L'Chatchila one should not rely on those berachos for one's Shabbos count of berachos. Rather one should only rely on berachos made from nightfall on Friday through nightfall on Shabbos. S'U Shevet Halevi 5:23, Minchas Shlomo 2:4:27, Tshuvos V'Hanhagos 4:60, Mishnah Brurah 267:5

950. If one is unable to fulfill the count of 100 berachos himself, even after counting the berachos of Kiddush and Havdalah made by another person on one's behalf (counted L'chatchila),  or Berachos of those who are called to the Torah (counted Bi'dieved); or Berachos of Shmona Esrei - Chazoras Hashatz (counted Bi'dieved), then;

951. B'shaas Hadchak (if one has no other choice) one may rely on the opinion of the Pri Megadim by answering Amen to any number of berachos made by another person (so long as one listens attentively to the entire beracha). Shulchan Aruch w/Mishnah Brurah 46:3, Halichos Shlomo 1:22:23, Sefer Mitzvos 100 Berachos Kehilchasan 2:3, Pri Megadim 47:3, Piskei Tshuvos 46:10

952. According to the opinion of Rashi one may, B'shaas Hadchak (if one has no other choice) rely upon saying "Ein Keilokeinu" which counts as 12 berachos (although it does not have Hashem's name like a typical beracha). Sefer Hapardes 1, Machzor Vitri 1, Rokeach 319, Shibolei Halaket 1, Piskei Tshuvos 46:10

953. The reason it counts as 12 berachos is because the 12 stanzas beginning with the letters 'Aleph' 'Mem' and 'Nun' spell Amen, and the other 8 stanzas begin with the words 'Boruch' and 'Attah'. However, according the opinion of Kolbo all 20 stanzas count as 20 berachos. Kolbo 37, Piskei Tshuvos 46:10

954. Some say the institution of saying 100 berachos each day is to ward off the 100 curses mentioned in Parshas Bechukosai. (98 written and 2 which are hinted at). Machzik Beracha 46 citing Kosnas Ohr al Hatorah

955. One who makes 100 berachos daily will be protected from death when in a dangerous situation. Bach 46, Pri Migadim 47:3 One who makes 100 berachos daily is assured of being a "ben Olam Habah". Birchas Yosef 46:5 citing Orchos Chaim L'Rav A'M'lunil

956. One who makes 100 berachos daily is considered to have brought a Korban Olah to Hashem. This is based upon a remez (hint) from the possuk in Parshas Vayikrah - "Odom Ki Yakriv Mikem Korbon". The word "Mikem" is the gematria equivalent of 100. Sifsei Kohen - Migurei Ha'Ari Vayikra, Piskei Tshuvos 46:8

957. One who makes 100 berachos daily receives a beracha from Hashem in his Parnassah, will fulfill his days and years, and will succeed against any enemies. Siddur R' Yaakov Emden

958. It is a mitzvah for one to keep a written record of how many berachos one has said during the day (and utilize a permissible system on Shabbos/Yom Tov), and "this count is exceptionally beloved by Hashem". Siddur R' Yaakov Emden (Halachos after Maariv 2,4)

959. The Kaf Hachaim writes that one must be very careful when making berachos to think of the meaning of the words, say each word carefully, and concentrate that one is a human, born of a woman, being given the ability to speak directly to the holy, great, powerful, and awesome King of all Kings. Kaf Hachaim 46:31

Of the 613 Mitzvos, there are Six Constant Mitzvos. Rather than requiring the performance of a certain action, these mitzvos are a state of being, of living with the reality of God's existence. The Six Constant Mitzvos are:

* Believe there is a God.
* Don't believe in other gods.
* Believe God is one.
* Love God.
* Fear God.
* Don't be misled by your heart and eyes.
