What's lurking in cyberspace?

Have you sat at your computer and heard unusual noises coming from your
hard drive? You do a quick once-over - see your browser is open, still
nothing seems odd.
A few moments later, just to be safe, you launch the task manager, and
after reviewing the processes you conclude nothing is out of the
ordinary. The sounds have disappeared -- so it couldn't be anything
serious, right? You go back to business as usual... or so you thought.
