| Dear,
What a beautiful summer we've had !!.....warm, sunny days and cool nights. We've had so many wonderful visitors from all over the country, not to mention some interesting international travellers. It's so much fun to visit with quilters from all over.....we have so much in common, whatever our backgrounds. (It's the same feeling I got from watching the Olympics.) No matter what our beliefs and politics, we share a love of fabric, color, and pattern. We appreciate each other's talents and encourage each other. We are more alike than different!
But alas, as fall approaches I know the number of travellers will decrease. The shop may get a little quieter, but we are grateful for the extra time as we have two big events in September to prepare for. Look for information below on our TENT SALE and the FLATHEAD QUILTERS GUILD SHOW.
We have gotten some wonderful new fabrics in since our last newsletter. We have some very pretty, soft pastel flannels that Karri has put in a Yellow Brick Road. Come in and see the sample she has sewn. A limited number of kits are available for this. We are still getting more Christmas fabrics in, and we have some new children's prints. But our new favorites are the RADIANCE SILKS! These silk/cotton blends are available in 25 colors, including a prepared for dyeing white. We have used these in a traditional pieced quilt and they behaved nicely! But of course the crazy quilters are going to love them. We also had the crazy quilters in mind when we ordered the new brocades, but again, they work out nicely in pieced quilts, too. We have fat quarter packs available in these fabrics, or you may buy off the bolt.
We are hard at work on our new patterns. They aren't all ready, but I thought I'd give you a sneak preview of some of them now! Just scroll down to see what we have so far, including Ty Livingston's Peek-a-BOO, Brenda Yirsa's Plumeria, Bird of Paradise, and Hibiscus, Toni Whitney's Elk and Cougar, David King's Retriever, and Lori Faye Bock's A Few of My Favorite Things. There is a new Debi Hubbs and another David King still coming. They don't all have official names yet....they are that new! We don't have all the prices worked out, but we are taking preorders if you are interested.
Last, but not least, I want to thank everyone who has supported Team Baboobala this year. The team has been training hard for their walk, which takes place September 12, 13, and 14. We are still raffling off a couple of items, so I don't have a final fundraising total, but I can tell you that you have made a tremendous difference in the fight against breast cancer. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!
Happy quilting,
Lynn

| BOOK BUCKS |
|
MANY, MANY TO CHOOSE FROM!
It's been awhile since I mentioned our Book Bucks program, so I thought I'd let our new subscribers know what it's all about, and let the rest of you know that it's still going strong! Here's how it works: Bring in your old quilting books that are still in great condition. We will give you book bucks (store credit) for 25% of their original retail value. We will then offer them for sale for half off. The books must be in near new condition. It's up to store staff to decide whether or not to accept a book. So many people have taken advantage of this....both to lighten the load on their own shelves, and to obtain books for near the price of a single pattern! We have just received a HUGE influx of books. We're going through them right now and will have them priced and out in the shop soon! Next time you're in, don't forget to check out the "Gently Used Books". |
| SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER CLASS SCHEDULE |
|
|
HAND QUILTING Saturday August 30 1-4 pm Instructor: Mary Sanchez Fee: $10/hour Although many of us turn to machine quilting because of its speed, there are those special tops that just call out for hand quilting. Mary keeps the tradition alive in our shop, but uses special ergonomic methods, a la Thimblelady, to prevent the repetitive motion injuries often associated with hand quilting. Whether you are brand new to hand quilting, or need to learn a new way to do it, spend some time with Mary. You'll be surprised how fast you can pick up this method. This class is charged "by the hour" at the rate of $10 per hour. You may only need two hours, but Mary has set aside three hours for this class. You will only pay for the time you need. BEGINNING FUSIBLE APPLIQUE Saturday September 13 10-4 Instructor: OK Carol Rockwell Fee: $30 Using your choice of our two beginning patterns, Apple of my Eye or Bootiful, you will learn step by step, from the beginning how to do fusible appliqué. After this class you will have the skills and confidence to tackle the more detailed patterns such as those by Toni Whitney. Kits are available in the shop for these patterns, or, of course, you may choose your own fabrics. LONGARMS & LAUGHTER Sunday September 14 1-3 pm Everyone with an interest in longarm quilting is welcome to this guild meeting. The objective of this group is education and charitable endeavors. Please come and see what it's all about! Sue and Art from Suzy Q Quilter will be at this meeting to demonstrate their Doodling Designs. We will also use this meeting to plan future programs. Hope you can attend! BEGINNING LONGARM QUILTING Instructor: Karri Schaper Thursdays September 4, 18, October 2, 16 10-1 (Choose one session) Fee $60 For those who are interested in learning Longarm Quilting from the beginning, this is the class for you! This is a one-on-one class, totally individualized to suit your needs. You will learn how to load your quilt on the machine, how to thread the machine, how to start and end your stitching, and how to work from both sides of the machine. No experience is necessary..... BEGINNING QUILTING Two separate sessions are offered for these classes. Please choose Wednesday evenings or Friday daytimes. Wednesdays September 17, 24, October 1, 8, 15, and 22 6:30-9:30 pm OR Fridays October 10, 17, 24, and 31 10 am-3 pm Instructor: Karri Schaper Fee: $75 Learn to quilt the "Piece o' Cake" way with the help of Karri Schaper. Using the book "Piecing the Piece o' Cake" Way, Karri will walk you through the "how to" process of selecting fabric colors, understanding supplies needed, piecing the quilt top, to the final steps of quilting and binding your quilt. TENT SALE Friday September 19 and Saturday September 20 10-4 All fabric for sale under the tents will be only $5/yard!! QUILTS OF VALOR Saturday September 20 9 am-2 pm On this day our classroom will be open to all who are interested in assembling blocks made by the Bigfork Piecemakers Guild into Quilts of Valor. The mission of the QOV Foundation is to cover ALL war wounded and injured servicemembers and veterans from the War on Terror whether physical or psychological wounds with Wartime quilts called Quilts of Valor (QOVS). For more information call Charlene Payne, 837-4025.
FLATHEAD QUILTERS GUILD SHOW "OPTICAL ILLUSIONS"
Friday September 26 10-6
Saturday September 27 10-6
Sunday September 27 11-4
SEW HAPPY SWEATSHIRT Friday October 3 OR Saturday October 4 10-4 Instructor: Julie Rinard Fee: $50 Join us as we welcome Julie Rinard back to town to teach her fabulous Sew Happy Sweatshirt. This is our all time most popular class! There are a lot of sweatshirt patterns out there, but we think Julie's is the best....and you have a chance to learn tips and techniques right from the creator! We have several kits available, or we'll help you choose your own fabrics. This design works well with any and all fabric designs....batiks, plaids, daiwabos, pretty florals, you name it! WILDLIFE APPLIQUE Thursdays October 9 and October 23 10-3 Instructor: OK Carol Rockwell Fee: $40 CHOOSE your favorite Toni Whitney design and let OK Carol guide you, step by step, towards creating your own beautiful art quilt. Come to class with your pattern pieces traced on fusible web, as this is the most time-consuming step. Carol will show you how to use the subtle shadings of the batik fabric to your best advantage, as well as how to "build" your design section by section. This is NOT a beginning fusible appliqué class. You MUST have experience with this method. We do have kits for these patterns, but they are extremely popular. Sometimes we have to wait quite a while for a specific batik fabric to come in. So, if you'd like a kit, PLEASE purchase it as soon as possible. INTRODUCTION TO HAND APPLIQUE Saturdays October 25 and November 1 10-3 Instructor: Becky Jacobson Fee: $60 In this two day class you will learn four different styles of hand appliqué. You will learn traditional needleturn, reverse or Nigerian, cut away, and buttonhole techniques. We will cover "positive" fabric choices, threads, needles, different types of templates and the appropriate uses, and how to make them. You will leave this class knowing how to conquer curves, straight lines, sharp points, and crisp valleys. ***************************************** COMING IN NOVEMBER..... Crazy Quilted Christmas Ornaments and perhaps a Mystery Quilt Weekend over Thanksgiving weekend... (any hunting widows looking to have their own fun?) We'll keep you posted!
