CLASS SCHEDULE FOR JULY & AUGUST

Greetings!

As I write this, it is an absolutely beautiful summer day.  The weatherman is predicting record warm temperatures for the next few days.  SO, you know what that means........Christmas and Flannel fabrics are here!  Jane has been very busy making room for all the new winter fabrics that are arriving daily.  Stop by soon and view our new selections, and make use of the coupon at the end of this newsletter!

Look for an update below on Team Baboobala.......

Please note that the shop will be closed for the holiday weekend, July 4th and 5th.

The Longarm Guild will meet in our classroom on Sunday, July 13 from 1-3pm.  We have had several requests to open up the shop after the meeting so we will do so, and stay open as long as you like.

There is a wonderful exhibit at the Montana Historical Society Museum that you'll want to check out.  It is called Traditions in Color and Comfort:  Montana's Quilting Heritage.  This exhibit will be on display through April 2009.  The museum is located at 225 North Roberts in Helena.  For more information call 406-444-4710.

We've combined our July and August class schedules into one newsletter to accomodate those that are planning vacations.  If there's a class you are interested in that isn't on the schedule, please let us know.  We'd be happy to add more classes....it only takes three people for most classes.

Finally, we'd just like to thank all of our loyal customers for continuing to support us.  We're all getting pinched by the rising gas costs.  Please know that we are keeping our costs down as much as possible.  Most of our regular cottons are still $8.50 and $8.75.  None of our batiks (except the extra-wide, of course), are over $9.50.  We are trying our best to absorb the increases we are seeing.

We are planning some fun things for fall, including another Mystery Quilt and Cotton Theory Club.  We welcome suggestions on how we can better serve you.....

Our Heart @ Work auction, held Saturday, June 28, raised over $4,000 towards our goal of $11,000.  A heartfelt thank you to all of you who came and bid.  I know you all went home with wonderful treasures!

Speaking of treasures, on Saturday, July 12 the girls will be hosting a Yard Sale, so we're all cleaning house!  The sale will be held next door to the shop at 135 Village Lane, from 9 AM to 4 PM.  All money raised will benefit the team.  We are accepting donations for the yard sale at this time.  Please contact Lee Stulz (837-0056) if you have something you'd like to donate.  And please come by on the 12th.  There will be something for everyone.

JULY/AUGUST CLASS SCHEDULE

HAND QUILTING

Saturday   July 12   10-1
INSTRUCTOR   Mary Sanchez
Fee   $30 or $10 per hour

Although many of us turn to machine quilting because of its speed, there are those special tops that just call out for hand quilting.  Mary keeps the tradition alive in our shop, but uses special ergonomic methods, a la Thimblelady, to prevent the repetitive motion injuries often associated with hand quilting.  Whether you are brand new to hand quilting, or need to learn a new way to do it, spend some time with Mary.  You'll be surprised how fast you can pick up this method.  This class is charged "by the hour" at the rate of $10 per hour.  You may only need two hours, but Mary has set aside three hours for this class.  You will only pay for the time you need.

LONGARM GUILD
Sunday   July 13   1-3
Fee   Free

HAND PIECING
Saturday   July 12   1-4
INSTRUCTOR   Mary Sanchez
Fee   $30

Have you ever wanted to "step back in time" and experience quilting as it was in its early days?  Let Mary lead you, step by step, through the process of hand piecing.  Yes, you will take advantage of modern conveniences and rotary-cut your pieces.  Then Mary will show you how to accurately trace your seam allowances and how to sew your pieces together to form your block.  Hand pieced blocks make wonderful take-along projects for traveling or waiting rooms.  There are some "tricks of the trade", so join Mary to learn the best way to do it!

INTRODUCTION TO COTTON THEORY
Tuesday   July 15   5-9   OR
Tuesday   July 29   1-5
INSTRUCTOR   Mo Harrah
Fee   $65  (includes class fee, kit, and book)

This is the jumping off point for all Cotton Theory projects.  Although the idea of "quilt as you go" has been around for a long time, Betty Cotton has perfected it!  In this class you will learn what Cotton Theory is and how it is different from what you have been doing.  Your entire Cotton Theory project, whether a small candlemat or a king size quilt, is done on your home sewing machine....no hand work at all!  Although the class fee includes a fabric kit for this project, you will learn how to cut out a Cotton Theory quilt...yes, it is different from what you are used to.  In this class you will complete a candlemat, right down to the binding...done a la Betty Cotton, of course!  Use the skills you learn in this class to create a full-size quilt!

WILDLIFE APPLIQUE
Thursday   July 17   10-4   OR
Saturday   July 26    10-4
INSTRUCTOR   OK Carol Rockwell
FEE   $30
Winter Wolf
CHOOSE your favorite Toni Whitney design and let OK Carol guide you, step by step, towards creating your own beautiful art quilt.  Come to class with your pattern pieces traced on fusible web, as this is the most time-consuming step.  Carol will show you how to use the subtle shadings of the batik fabrics to your best advantage, as well as how to "build" your design section by section.  This is NOT a beginning fusible appliqué class.  You MUST have experience with this method.

ENGLISH PAPER PIECING
Saturday   July 19   1-3
INSTRUCTOR  Mary Sanchez
FEE   $20

Have you joined the English paper piecing craze?  If not, come and see what it's all about.  But just know, it's incredibly addicting!  (Don't say we didn't warn you!!)  Seriously, in this class Mary will show you how it's done.  Its roots go back to the eighteenth century, and it's done very much the same way now as it was then.  But we love the modern paper templates available.  No more tracing on newspaper or catalog pages!  Come to the shop and see the wonderfully bright Grandmother's Flower Garden that Jane has made.  The beauty of this technique is how well it translates to all fabric types.  Although this class will focus on piecing by hand, we will also demonstrate how it can be done by machine.  The templates available include hexagons in several sizes, diamonds, trapezoids, and pentagons.  The possibilities are endless for combining these.......

CHEVRON COLORWASH
Thursday   July 24   10-3   and
Thursday   July 31   10-3
INSTRUCTOR   Becky Jacobson
FEE   $50

Join Becky as she guides you, step by step, as you create your own colorwash beauty!  First session will concentrate on cutting and piecing your top.  Then you will go home and finish up your top in order to be ready to tackle the mitered borders in the second session.  Becky will make it easy for you!  Her beautiful sample, done in rich batiks, is hanging in the shop. This quilt would be beautiful done up in florals, hand-dyed fabrics, orientals...you name it!

TULIP TANGO PLACEMATS  (COTTON THEORY CLASS)
Wednesday   August 6   12-5
INSTRUCTOR   Mo Harrah
FEE   $25   (Book required,  Cotton Theory Quilting 2)
Tulip Tango Placemat
Choose your own fabrics for these adorable placemats that have pockets for folded napkins.  You will complete one placemat in class, and finish the rest up at home.  You will want to purchase your book and fabrics ahead of time so you are ready to go when class starts.

Thursday   August 7   7-9
INSTRUCTOR   Mo Harrah
FEE   $20

In this class, a technique class, you will learn to use the decorative stitches on your machine to enhance your latest project, be it a border, Cotton Theory, or clothing.  It's FUN, and the possibilities are endless!!

FOUNDATION PIECING
Saturday  August 9   1-4
INSTRUCTOR   Clara Clark
FEE   $20

Learn the basics of foundation piecing as you create three blocks.  This method is often referred to as paper piecing, but do not confuse this with English paper piecing.  Clara will start you at the very beginning....how to choose designs, select and cut fabrics, and transfer your design to your foundation.  Then you will learn how to create your block, step by step.  You will have the opportunity to piece on various foundations, such as tissue paper, computer paper, and/or interfacing.  You will leave with completed blocks ready to become potholders, wall quilts, tablerunners, etc.
