INTERNATIONAL AIKI PEACE WEEK
Aikido schools around the world are offering free classes to the public in peaceful conflict resolution during INTERNATIONAL AIKI PEACE WEEK, in conjunction with this year's United Nations International Peace Day. The Free Classes in SLO will take place Sept 21 and 23.
What is Aikido? Aikido is a non-violent martial art. Besides its self defense uses, Aikido is now used all over the world for conflict resolution, community relations, organizational and leadership development, business practices, education, psychotherapy, trauma recovery, and international peacemaking.
When are the Free Public Classes in SLO? Tuesday September 21 Aikido Peacemaking Principles 6-7:30pm A
class teaching Aikido Peacemaking Principles in an easy, non-strenuous
way that can be learned quickly and used immediately. Although this
class is experiential, there will be no physical exertion.
Thursday September 23 Aikido Physical Practice 6-7:30pm Aikido
movements and techniques for adults of all ages, and mature teens. This
class is physically oriented, but no prior experience is needed.
What does Physical Training have to do with Conflict Resolution? For many people, it's a new and surprising idea that physical practice is an important part of training yourself to respond peacefully to conflict. Yet, it is important to gain control of the human body's reflexes in order to instill more effective and peaceful default responses to stress, conflict, or attack. Aikido training helps transform the body's "fight-or-flight, aggression-or-fear" reactions to a mind-body state of calm alertness - aware and ready to neutralize attack in the most effective and peaceful way possible.
What about simple daily life disputes? Conflicts in daily life disputes can be handled the same way Aikido
deals with physical attacks. The first step is always to connect and
blend: Shift your stance to be alongside the other so you can see from
his/her point of view and express an understanding before offering him/her the opportunity to view another perspective.
"In Aikido we can use the body as a metaphor to express and play with
different modes of responding to conflict. Simply shifting one's
physical stance goes a long way toward understanding and resolution." Mary Tesoro, Chief Instructor, Aikido of San Luis Obispo
