Is Your Christmas Too Extravagant?

Christmas shoppingChristmastime is a time of extravagance. In décor, gifts and spending we see overindulgence everywhere. Many of us spend all we have or more than we have budgeted, often going into debt with credit cards to ensure the season is lavish.

International Business Times recently reported that 42% of people are in debt due to Christmas expenditures and that Christmas is forcing 15% of people to sell jewelry and other items to afford the festive season. How can we keep the ghost of Christmas past from ruining our New Year when the credit card bills start rolling in? How can we tell when a lot is too much and how does God feel about extravagant gifts and displays of splendor?

Tips for Great Gift and Party Ideas

Need some ideas to focus on Christmas joy and cut back on expenses? Try these:

ˇ Make homemade gifts. Most people love the personal touch of homemade items, especially during the holidays.

ˇ Conserve the planet and go green by regifting items that don't suit your taste.

ˇ Give coupons for favors or services you can provide. For example, you may know a couple that would love to have a babysitter for an evening out. Use a blank note card and draft a coupon good for a free night of babysitting so they can enjoy a great date night. You could also create your own on your computer.

ˇ Have a jewelry or scarf-swapping party. My "know-how-to-throw-a-great-party" friend, Barb Swanson, did this last year. It's like a Dirty Santa gift exchange, but each lady brings a scarf. You could also do the same thing with a piece of jewelry. It's super fun and everyone is sure to go home with something they will like.

 Scarf Party

Need some holiday décor or attire but don't want to spend a fortune?

Have a clothing/décor swap. All of us have things we are tired of but would be new to our friends. Select a friend to host a clothing and décor swap. Have your friends bring gently used clothing and décor to the host's house the morning of the party and give her time to arrange. Later that day when the guests arrive, each one will get to pick out one item for each item she brought.
