On-Going Boot
Camp!!

You asked for it -- you got it!!

Since many regular campers were worried about loosing their progress between camps, we made a change to solve this problem.

Now you can do a traditional 4-week camp, beginning on any day you want, or you can make it a lifestyle!

 1. You can start any day and your camp will run for 4 weeks. The cost of this is the same as always --  $199 for a 4-week, 3-day-a-week camp.

2. Sign up for our auto-renew program. We we will charge your debit or credit card $179 once a month for Boot Camp. This is still the same fabulous Monday, Wednesday and Friday Boot Camp, but you only pay $179/month instead of $199/4 weeks. This is obviously $20 less, but you also get to attend more days of camps than you paid for. Plus, you have the benefit of lasting, long-term weight loss and toning. What a great deal!

Greetings!

My family and I recently returned from a long-weekend trip to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico (those "kids-fly-and-eat-free specials rock!) On Saturday, we paid a local named Marine to take us in his small boat snorkeling and to the village of Yelapa, a destination reachable only by water and home of a beautiful waterfall. Although the excursion was incredibly enjoyable, the most memorable part was Marine's parrot named Wilson who accompanied us.

Our 9-year-old son Maverick made sure Wilson was on his shoulder... no matter what. But Maverick was especially proud to have that parrot with him as we hiked the short trail through Yelapa up to the waterfall. All the Mexican children -- and many of the adults -- from the village pointed at our boy and the parrot and giggled with an unexpected joy. This made Maverick walk even taller as he was proud to be the center of such positive attention. Even though Wilson pooped down Maverick's back, Maverick still beamed as the little green bird brought so much glee and made him feel so special.

What if we could all wear our positive life experiences on our shoulders and carry them with such confidence that it made all those we passed by smile? What if we wore our pride from caring for ourselves through exercise and nutrition, our love for others, our unique service to humanity, and our gratitude just to be alive -- all combined as an imaginary Wilson for all the world to see? It wouldn't matter that some of our life experiences didn't turn out the way we hoped (that's the figurative poop down our backs), just holding ourselves the way that little boy carried that parrot would surely bring more joy into the world.

Try it today. Walk with pride, carrying the "Wilson" of your amazing life on your shoulder, and see if people don't smile back!

Here's to you!

Debbie Pearson

Original home town:

I was born in the small, quaint town of Farmersville, TX. At the age of 10 my family moved to North Richland Hills, TX, and it is where my parents still reside today.

Years in Granbury area:

This is my second time to live in the Granbury area. After graduating from college and marrying my high school sweetheart Bill Pearson, we moved to Granbury and made it our home until 1989. In 2001, we returned to the Granbury area once again this time making our home in Tolar.

How long have you been training with Empower Personal Fitness Studio?

My training with Empower started in January of this year.

Who is your primary trainer?

Mark Isham is my trainer. Not only is he an excellent trainer, but he is such a great guy. He is always encouraging and pushing me to achieve my goals.

Why did you decide to begin training?

Retirement is great. However, I found myself missing the interaction I had with my peers. Exercising seemed to be a good way to meet new people and fulfill a need to get into better shape.

What are your goals?

When I started training, toning up and losing weight were my primary goals. After awhile I realized that achieving those goals involved more than just exercising. It also involved developing a self discipline lifestyle of eating nutritionally.

What physical differences have you noticed since exercise became a regular part of your life?

One of my favorite things to do is to work in my flower garden. I found through exercising I have developed more strength, flexibility and endurance.

What emotional differences have you noticed since you began putting your health as a priority?

Putting my health first was never a real priority for me. Now that exercising has become a major part of my daily routine, I feel not only physically but emotionally fit as well. It has helped me to set goals for myself and realize that I can achieve them. I no have a more positive outlook on life.

How are you living your life differently now that you are in better shape?

Being in better shape requires a commitment outside of the gym. Exercising at home and being aware of what I am eating is important to my overall fitness.

What do you have the confidence to do now, that you never would have done before?

Confidence was something I lacked when it came to exercising. Mark has worked so hard to build my confidence. Always encouraging and telling me what a good job I am doing. Because of that I now feel at ease in the gym and have the confidence to tackle new skills.

Who have you inspired to make a positive change in their life since you've made a positive change in yours?

I personally don't know of anyone that I have inspired. Hopefully my family and friends will see such a change in me that they will be inspired to live a healthier life.

What are you the most proud of?

There are several things that I am proud of. Skills that I have mastered, being in better shape and eating healthier. But the thing that I am most proud of is the confidence that I have built in myself.

 Shelby's comments:
Debbie is such a ray of light in the studio. She is always smiling and eager to challenge herself. She approaches each workout with a joyful spirit and sense of adventure. Debbie didn't have a lot of "weight" to lose when she began, however her work with Mark has greatly reduced her body fat and sculpted a toned, lean, and youthful exterior. She is such a beautiful woman and we're grateful she's a part of Empower Personal Fitness Studio's healthy family!

Shelby's Empowered Granola Bars

You've been aking -- some of you begging -- for the recipe I used for the granola bars we served at the new studio ribbon cutting and I made to celebrate our client, Sara Baker's 80th birthday. So here it is... drum roll, please! Enjoy!

2 cups oats
¾ cup wheat germ (can substitute whole wheat flour if necessary)
¾ cup sunflower seeds
1 cup crushed almonds or peanuts
2/3 cup brown sugar
½ cup honey
4 tbsp butter
2 tsp vanilla extract
½ tsp salt
8 oz. raisins

Crush almonds or peanuts in food processor. Mix nuts, oats, wheat germ, and sunflower seeds in a baking dish with sides. Toast them in the oven for 10 - 12 minutes, stirring often to prvent burning. Meanwhile, prepare a glass baking dish (about 11 x 13 inches) for your granola by lining it with waxed paper lightly sprayed with nonstick spray.

Put brown sugar, honey, butter, vanilla, and salt into a saucepan and bring to a simmer, stirring constantly. Once your grains are toasted, mix everything together in a large bowl - the grains, the "liquid glue", and the raisins. Mix well.

Dump granola mixture into prepared baking dish. Spread out mixture with wooden spoon or spatula. Fold over sides of waxed paper or add a sheet on top and press hard all over the granola. You want to compact it together so that your bars won't fall apart when you cut them. Wait 2 -3 hours or until granola is totally cooled. Open the waxed paper and carefully turn the granola onto a large cutting board, peeling away the rest of the paper. Firmly pressing down with a big knife (not sawing), cut your granola into whatever size bars you'd like. Wrap each individually for handy snacks.
