Greetings!

Turn off your TV. Hit the red button on the remote, set it down, and walk away. I guarantee, your health will be much better because of it.

And not for reasons you think. Fitness professionals always encourage Americans to get off their butts and move, which is always good advice. But I'm suggesting you turn off your TV for another, equally important reason. Your attitude will improve.

TV news sustains itself on bad news, because bad news creates drama, and apparently everybody loves drama. When the stock market drops 400 points, the media covers it from every angle. When the stock market rebounds 300 points the next day (as happened a week or so ago), the story is buried at the end the of the newscast, if covered at all.

I swear, the collective hand-wringing and sky-is-falling attitude that has overtaken many a sensible person is all TV related. If you subject yourself to round-the-clock bad news, err... I mean cable news, you can't help but think the end of days is near.

I'm not saying our country isn't facing some challenges. That's obvious. What I am saying is that you can choose, just as I have, not to participate in the economic situation that the media tells us we're in. Every successful and truly healthy person I know maintains a positive attitude by carefully limiting what they expose their minds and thoughts to. They make decisions deliberately and then stick with their decisions and actions through thick and thin. In doing so, they are the ones in control of their thoughts and behaviors, rather than relegating control to entities in hot pursuit of ratings.

And when you feel in control of your life, you are infinitely healthier. Or is it when you're healthier and more fit, you feel more in control of your life? Hmmm... maybe both. Perhaps that's why I've not heard even one of our clients complain about the economy.

Contemplate that in the peace of your newfound silence.

Control your attitude and you control your world,

Shelby

SPOTLIGHTING AN
AMAZING CLIENT...
Sandra Williams
sandra
·    Original home town:
Breckenridge, Texas, where I was actually born and lived until I married my husband, James.  After living a short time in Mineral Wells, we moved to Granbury.

·    Years in Granbury area:
We moved from Mineral Wells with our oldest daughter, Christy in 1973... so about thirty-five years. Guess we fell in love with this little town (at the time) on the lake and decided to raise our family here!  Both daughters attended GISD and graduated Granbury High School!  Our nest has been empty now for about ten years.

·    How long have you been training with Shelby Murphy Training & Fitness?
My first day was January 28th 2008, it's been a little bit more than eight months. The time has passed quickly; it doesn't seem possible. I love the friendly atmosphere at Shelby's!  Not only do the trainers all know you by name and greet you with a friendly smile and "hello" when you arrive and a "have a nice day" when you leave, but it is small enough that you get to know most of the people who are working out at the same time as you.

·    Who is your primary trainer?
Scott is my trainer and I would highly recommend him to anyone!  He has such an extensive knowledge of personal training.  He knows exactly when and how much to increase my work load and intensity. He pushes me but never to the point of more than I can do. I have even picked up a little "smack talk" from him!  Another thing Scott incorporates is the food journal.  I hate to admit but I have learned to love and appreciate that he holds me accountable for my eating habits.  It's a bit of a hassle to remember to write everything down that I eat, but not only does it hold me accountable,  it has helped me to realize the quantity and quality of what I eat!  And now that I am eating healthy, I don't even miss the bad food that I was accustomed to.

·    Why did you decide to begin training?   What are your goals?
I had become complacent and comfortable with the idea that at my mature age, I would just live in the unfit, overweight body I had created over the past ten years.  My husband and I love to eat out and that's what we did most of the time. I remember finishing a meal and feeling miserable from overeating.  But only an hour later I was thinking about where we would eat the next meal.  Our youngest daughter, Jayme, had began to beg me, shame me and encourage me to lose some weight and work out before my health began to suffer the consequenses of my bad habits. I have a sister who has had three heart attacks and my brother died of a heart attack at the young age of 47.  My husband has numerous stents.  I totally agreed with her that I needed to do something but lost my motivation when she left to go back home.  One day, when she was in town, she pulled the car into Shelby's and said Mom, let's just check this place out.  I said okay not really thinking that I would sign up.  In fact I was just curious more than anything.  I met one of the clients in the parking lot whom I used to worked with. She sang  praises of Shelby Murphy Training and Fitness and encouraged me to sign up!  Not to mention that she looked great, too!  We visited with Scott a few minutes and I decided to try it.  The rest is history and my future is looking brighter everyday!  I give the praise to God who has blessed me with good health and Scott who got me where I am today!  My goal is to just keep up this training as long as possible and never let myself slip back into my old life style again!

·    What physical differences have you noticed since exercise became a regular part of your life?
I feel much younger and am more agile than I have been in a long time.  Gone are the days of having to push myself up with my arms from seated positions.  My core is 100% stronger!  Some days I feel like I can walk forever doing my cardio.

·    What emotional differences have you noticed since you began putting your health as a priority?
Emotionally.... I have always been pretty good there.  But I do have much more energy which helps me to enjoy every moment of my life and look forward to doing more for others.

·    How are you living your life differently now that you are in better shape?
I can enjoy working in my yard since it isn't such a strain and doesn't hurt my knees as much to get up and down.  I now look for things to do instead of looking for excuses not to do things.

·    What do you have the confidence to do now, that you never would have done before?
Being in this spotlight feature!

·    Who have you inspired to make a positive change in their life since you've made a positive change in yours?
My sister!  She and I walk together every morning.  She is handicapped and the walks are slow but she is out and moving!

·    What are you the most proud of?
I am beginning to get back into clothes that I almost got rid of thinking that I would never be this size again.  Now I'm looking forward to losing more weight.  Guess I'll just have to go shopping.....and I know it will be more enjoyable now to see a smaller self looking back at me in the dressing room mirror!
