| The Swine Flu Outbreak: Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery Planning for a Pandemic
|
Despite the growing number of cases involving the
swine flu outbreak, deaths to date have been largely confined to
Mexico. Cases in the U.S. have appeared in only a few states; only one
death has occurred so far, although experts expect there will be more.
In an address marking his first 100 days in office on April 29th,
President Obama said, "our public health officials have recommended
that schools with confirmed or suspected cases of this flu strongly
consider temporarily closing. If more schools are forced to close,
we've recommended that both parents and businesses think about
contingency plans if their children do have to stay home."
Review your disaster recovery/business continuity plan and then consider the following when planning for the impact of pandemic... Read More

Guidelines on Disaster Recovery Roles and Training
|
With the increasing amount of industry standards
and technical certifications associated with business continuity (BC)
and disaster recovery (DR), best practices are starting to accumulate
around the roles key personnel play when it comes to BC/DR planning.
From the CIO, to the IT department to stakeholders from various
operational units, lots of people have important roles to play in
planning, maintaining, auditing, testing and implementing disaster
recovery and business continuity procedures.
The role of the recovery team in disaster recovery planning
The recovery team is the core of any disaster recovery or business
continuity effort. Recovery teams fall under the supervision of a CIO
or senior IT manager, known in this process as the "recovery team
head." The responsibility of the recovery team head is to coordinate
the efforts of its team's members and ensure an efficient BC/DR plan is
in place...Read More

| Bare Metal Restore in the Disaster Recovery Process
|
| When you buy a brand new hard drive, it is
completely blank. With no files or even
an operating system installed, it is mere "bare metal". In disaster recovery, a bare metal restore is
the process of reconfiguring a system from scratch after a disastrous failure. The term "Bare Metal Restore" refers to the
process of restoring data to a bare metal component, reinstalling the operating
system and software applications and then, if possible, restoring data and
settings. Enterprises often need to
restore full systems onto bare metal for immediate continuance of operations following
hardware failure, system upgrades or facility disaster...Read More

| 5 Questions to Ask an Offsite Data Backup Service Provider
|
Remote backup makes a lot of sense: allowing a reliable offsite data backup company
to keep your data safe and secure gives you peace of mind. However,
while there is a multitude of individual online backup service
providers on the market today that are focused on the consumer, there
are not as many designated for enterprises and small to mid-sized
businesses. Data is the most important business operational asset, so
selecting the right data backup company is critical and it is essential
for you to ensure that you make the best and most informed decision for
your business when choosing a remote backup service provider. While
there is no litmus test for choosing the right provider, consider the following questions... Read MoreBack to Top

| HITECH Act Expands Data Breach Notification Requirements
|
Data breach notice provisions applicable to health information were
signed into law as part of the Health Information Technology for
Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act provisions of the federal
economic stimulus legislation. The HITECH Act broadens HIPAA
data security and compliance requirements by directly subjecting
businesses that provide support and services to HIPAA covered entities
to HIPAA's privacy and security requirements, as well as penalties for
violating these policies. Under the changes brought in by the HITECH
Act, these business associates are now prone to the same government
civil and criminal penalties as covered entities. Prior to the new
legislation business associates that neglected to properly protect
patient data were liable to the covered entities via their service
contracts, but they did not face governmental penalties...Read More

| Reduce TCO with a Remote Backup Service Provider
|
Businesses are facing many hard-hitting challenges caused by the
current economic environment, where technology budgets have become
negatively impacted by the credit crunch. According to an article
published by the Wall Street Journal in October 2008, 61% of CIOs are
currently re-evaluating their budgets, 49% are trying to save money by
renegotiating contracts with their vendors, and almost 25% have
instituted a hiring freeze - which is a bad sign indicating that many
businesses may not have enough staff on hand to complete already
started projects on time. Opportunities for IT cost reduction can be
found within key categories where Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) can be
reduced, and core areas where remote backup companies enable savings
during these hard economic times that many businesses are facing...Read More

| Security Tightened After Data Loss at Hospital Trust
|
A hospital trust in Cambridgeshire has been ordered
to tighten security after a memory stick with medical treatment details
of 741 patients went missing. Cambridge University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, which runs
Addenbrooke's Hospital, was found to be in breach of the Data
Protection Act.
The Information Commissioners Office (ICO) said the stick was later returned to the hospital...Read More

| Government Loses Public's Trust Over Data Loss Failures
|
There has been a sharp fall in the public's confidence in the ability of
"most trusted" institutions such as doctors and the police to protect the
security and confidentiality of personal data and details, according to a study
by data protection company DQM.
Following a slew of high-profile data security breaches over the past two
years, UK citizens are concerned about the ability of public sector
organisations to handle their sensitive personal information. Least trusted were
councils (23%), central government departments (19%) and social networking sites
(15%)...Read More

| Many Employees Undermine Data Breach Prevention Strategies
|
Many employees disable the encryption solutions on their laptops,
putting their employers at risk for data breaches, according to a study
by Absolute Software Corp. and the Ponemon Institute.
The study, "The Human Factor in Laptop Encryption: US Study,"
examined the use of encryption on laptops by employees within
corporations in the United States. Data revealed that more than half
(56 percent) of business (non-IT) managers polled, disable the
encryption solution on their laptops. Ninety-two percent of IT security
practitioners reported that someone in their organization has had a
laptop lost or stolen, and 71 percent reported that it resulted in a
data breach. Results indicated that it is employee behavior that
undermines data protection efforts in corporate America...Read More
