Continuous Data Protection (CDP) Technologies in Backup and Recovery Today

Data backup and recovery is becoming faster and infinitely more granular thanks to continuous data protection (CDP).
According to a definition of CDP from the Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA), CDP software must have three elements:
  1. Data is continuously captured and modifications to files or blocks of data are tracked
  2. Data changes are store independently of the data itself
  3. The recovery of data is time-independent and doesn't need to be defined prior to recover...Read More

Your Business' Critical Need for Remote Backup Service

Statistics show that once data loss hits, the problem is pervasive affecting various areas of the business.  The consequences can be devastating.  Research reveals that 93% of companies that experience significant data loss go out of business within a five year period; almost two-thirds of those companies go out of business within six months.  More than 75% of those companies that test their backup tapes have found problems with their tapes, while 100% of disks and tape drives eventually fail....Read More

5 Solid Reasons Why Remote Backup Services Should Be Used Over Tape
Tape backup is an outdated method that compromises the reliability, security, cost-effectiveness and convenience needed for data protection and recovery.  The Gartner Group reported that nearly 50% of tape-based backup systems fail to restore correctly.  Moreover, according to Storage Magazine, more than 34% of organizations do not test their backups, and of those tested, 77% of them found their tape backup failed to recover.

The Advantages of a Tiered Storage Solution in Meeting Data Backup Requirements

Until recently, all "backups" were treated the same.  Traditionally, when people thought of tiered storage technologies, it was for production data only.  However, today's factors such as availability, redundancy, scalability, reliability and regulatory compliance all need to be considered as key aspects of backup storage solutions.  By employing an offsite data backup provider with a tiered solution, small and medium-sized companies can instantly have the high performance data backup storage and data archiving capabilities of large enterprises at a reasonable cost - amongst other benefits.

Tiered storage refers to the use of storage systems that have different performance, scale and cost characteristics.  A tiered storage solution assigns different categories of data to various types of storage devices and media based on service levels as defined by distinct business needs.  Data is moved across the tiers in accordance with business policies while data backup works throughout the storage environment to meet business continuity and disaster recovery obligations....Read More

Remote Backup Providers Ensure Healthcare Agencies are HIPAA Compliant

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) has complex requirements to improve the access and transfer of critical patient health records while maintaining strict data protection procedures. The federal government has mandated that health data security standards require healthcare providers to implement comprehensive security measures to ensure that electronic patient records are protected against data loss and unauthorized access. This calls for compliant data backup procedures to ensure the confidentiality of patient records regarding data backup transportation and storage. Healthcare providers who engage in electronic transactions must adhere to data privacy safeguards to protect sensitive customer information and health records. Using a remote backup company will help meet HIPAA compliancy through providing automatic and secure offsite data backup, along with on-demand data recovery in the event of a disaster. ...Read More

Think You're Compliant?  Corrupt Metadata Could Land You in Jail

The amount of data that companies must store is growing at an enormous pace as regulations including Sarbanes-Oxley, HIPAA, SEC 17a-4, and the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure -to name just a few-place an increasing burden on enterprise storage, backup and recovery needs. Fail to protect information in a recoverable state, and company officers face fines, other penalties and even jail time.

Matters are made more complex when enterprise content management (ECM) systems are in use. The benefits of ECM - workflow, collaboration, and integrated management of information assets - bring an extra level of responsibility when it comes to protecting the content and metadata within them. That extra level of care required primarily relates to ECM metadata -audit trails, digital signatures, workflows, renditions and other "data about data," which must be backed up with the content it supports in a synchronous manner to ensure full recoverability and compliance with regulatory mandates...Read More

Social Security Administration (SSA) Data Backup Still 6 Months Away

The Social Security Administration has no way to back up its data, and it's still six months away from bringing its initial backup online.

That means the information on every adult citizen for retirement or more 3 million disability applications SSA receives annually or the largest warehouse of medical records in the country the administration stores are not protected if someone or something happens to their current data center. And that data center is old and in desperate need of upgrade.
"Our data center is long past its usable life," says Mike Astrue, SSA's commissioner. "We are hitting our power limit. It will be very difficult to keep it running after 2012."...Read More
