 IHELP CELEBRATED 5 YEAR ANNIVERSARY

IHELP'S 5 Year Anniversary Concert turned out to be a very exciting and successful evening.  Over 100 attendees enjoyed Carraba's fabulous food, a delicious cake from Honey Moon Sweets, and the beautiful voice of Rebecca from the  Rebecca De La Torre Band.  There were many great raffle and silent auction items as well.

We enjoyed celebrating our 30+ faith congregations, community organizations, and volunteers who have made this innovative program a success in Tempe.  Plans are already in the works for the 2nd Annual Concert Event featuring a full menu from Carraba's and the Rebecca De La Torre Band.  You won't want to miss the next exciting IHELP Event in 2012.

**Thank you to our volunteers, we appreciate your generous support!  And to our sponsors:  Bethany Community Church, Carraba's, Digg's Logo Products, Grace Community Church, and Honeymoon Sweets.  And to the many companies who donated items for our raffle/silent auction.

THANK YOU TO NINA MASON PULLIAM CHARITABLE TRUST

The Nina Mason Charitable Check Presentation

The Nina Mason Charitable Trust awarded approximately $1.8 million to 22 Arizona non-profit organizations. This picture was taken on March 24, 2011 at the check presentation.

Since 1998 The Nina Mason Charitable Trust has awarded more than $91.5 million to 406 Arizona non-profit organization.  The Trust continues to further the causes Nina Pulliam supported during her life.  "As Trustees, we are pleased to continue her legacy of helping people in need, protecting animals and nature, and enriching community life," said Frank E. Russell, Trustee chairman.

The Interfaith Homeless Emergency Lodging Program (IHELP) was very thankful to be a recipient of $50,000 in the first round of grants in 2011.  The trust recognized 18 organizations helping people in need with grant commitments totaling $1,618,500.   Thank you Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust for helping us continue to empower those in need in the community!

CASE MANAGEMENT CORNER -                      ANOTHER SUCCESS STORY

Recently a client we'll call Paul, came from California to Tempe about a month ago with the goal of going back to school to get his GED.  He has been in the IHELP program and working with TCAA's Case Manager, Patrick Winters. The Salvation Army provided financial assistance enabling him to get his transcripts sent from California and he is now enrolled at Rio Salado Community College.  The IHELP program has provided meals, shelter, case management, bus passes, and more.  Patrick has been working with Paul on his resume and teaching him how to apply for jobs online. Last week, Paul obtained a part time job at a local car dealership.  His supervisor has been very supportive, even providing him with a new bicycle enabling him to make it to school and work.  Paul has recently received a new State Driver's License, food stamps and is waiting approval on AHCCCS for healthcare.  Paul continues to work and study for his GED, and is saving money to rent a room from someone in his congregation.  We are very proud of all that he has accomplished.  Paul is just one example of how the IHELP shelter, TCAA Case Management, and the Salvation Army work together in order to empower people!  We wish Paul continued success and we'll support him with any help he needs along the way!  We are also thankful for the many community members that support the program and employers willing to walk alongside our clients.

TCAA ~ A HEAT RELIEF NETWORK

TCAA has partnered with Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG) Continuum of Care Regional Committee on Homelessness to provide heat relief for vulnerable individuals in the Tempe Community.    TCAA is a water hydration site that provides a place where donations can be delivered, and individuals can receive water and refuge from the heat.  MAG coordinates this regional network and develops a map to the Heat Relief communities locations.

Tips to avoid Heat Related Illnesses:

-  Increased fluid intake, regardless of activity level.  IMPORTANT!

-  Limit exercise or outdoor activity between the hours of 11am-3pm

-  Wear sunscreen with minimum of SPF 15, reapply often

-  Wear a hat, light-weight clothing and sunglasses

-  Rest often in shady/cool areas so body temperature can cool down

 -  Never leave infants, children, or pets in a parked vehicle

-  Check on elderly neighbors to make sure their air conditioners are working and in use.  Visit shopping malls, the library, and heat refuge locations to take advantage of free air-conditioning

-  Other safety and heat related tips at www.azmag.gov

IHELP OPPORTUNITIES

There are many opportunities available to serve IHELP.  We are still in need of the following help:

*Coordinate a Water Drive (with the weather heating up IHELP guests are in need of water to keep hydrated).

*Laundry Sheets for IHELP Clients  ~

*Donate sheets

*Coordinate a Towel Drive, so our clients can keep up their hygiene and keep their employment.
