TEMPE EMPTY BOWLS RAISES AWARENESS AND FUNDS

Beautiful weather and Tempe Empty Bowls Photocaptivating live music contributed to another successful Tempe Empty Bowls Event raising $15,000 for TCAA and United Food Bank!  The event promotes hunger awareness in our community and around the world.  Hand-crafted bowls donated by local artists and area students are sold for a donation of $10.00/piece.  Whole Foods provided a delicious bowl of soup with each bowl purchase, symbolic of the caloric intake that must sustain many in the world for an entire day.

The Empty Bowls Committee would like to thank the following organizations for their generous support of this event:   The City of Tempe, The City of Tempe Cultural Services Ceramics Program, Marjon Ceramics, Emerson, Tempe Elementary School District, Tempe Union High School District, Walt Richardson, Motivo Creative, Tempe Convention and Visitors Bureau and Whole Foods Market.

On February 23rd, the Escalante Senior Center was transformed to provide the first East Valley One-Day Utility Assistance Event. In a single day, approximately 73 households (44 Tempe households) were assisted by staff and volunteers.  This event was coordinated in partnership with Maricopa County and five other East Valley CAP offices to process as many eligible utility assistance applications as possible.  Maricopa County recently received an additional $2.5 Million in Federal LIHEAP funds with Tempe being allocated an additional $500,000 for utility assistance.

In FY2008 Tempe Community Action Agency (TCAA) provided a total of 1,248 Tempe families with rent/utility assistance that totaled $519,966 in direct financial assistance preventing utility shut-offs and evictions.  Through January, 2009 TCAA has already distributed $117,970 in rent/mortgage assistance, and $374,858 in utility assistance for a total of $492,828 to 761 Tempe households.
