Volunteers Make the 2008 Holiday Toy Shoppe
a Great  Success!

Holiday Toy Shoppe Volunteer Photo
The Tempe Community Action Agency 2008 Holiday Toy Shoppe was a great success thanks to the hard work and dedication of volunteers who contributed more than 550 hours to this event.  This year's Toy Shoppe was sponsored by IKEA who supplied the retail space, toy collection and storage space, and many volunteers.  The three day event provided more than 3000 toys to 565 children throughout Tempe.

The Holiday Toy Shoppe program is set-up and designed to be run by volunteers with a TCAA staff member acting only as an organizer.  Volunteers take care of everything from beginning to end; building shelves, displaying toys, assisting parents with toy selection and wrapping, then finally taking down shelving and packing any left over toys for donation to the Salvation Army.

Volunteers are essential to the success of TCAA and its programs.  In FY2008, volunteers contributed 24,995  hours to the agency, with an in-kind value of $469,156. Thanks to those in the community who give the time and talent that contributes to the success of TCAA programs.  For more information on volunteer opportunities visit www.tempeaction.org.

8th Annual Tempe Empty Bowls

Empty Bowls 2008Mark your calendars. The 2009 Tempe Empty Bowls event will be held Friday, February 27th at 6th Street Park (just south of City Hall in Downtown Tempe), and Saturday, February 28th at Community Center Courtyard, 3500 S. Rural Rd. (courtyard is nestled between Tempe Public Library and Vihel Center buildings), SW Corner of Rural/Southern.

Tempe Empty Bowls features beautiful, hand-crafted bowls, made by potters at the City of Tempe Ceramics Program, local artists and by Tempe area high school and middle school students, and are available for a minimum donation of ten dollars.  With the purchase of a bowl, Whole Foods Market will offer a simple meal of soup and bread (symbolic of the caloric intake that must sustain many in the world for an entire day). Saturday's entertainment will include music from Walt Richardson, inspiring us with touches of folk, blues and various world rhythms. Both days are from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

The Empty Bowls Committee would like to thank the following organizations for their generous support of this event :  The City of Tempe, The City of Tempe Cultural Services Ceramics Program, Marjon Ceramics, Emerson Electric Co., Tempe Elementary School District, Tempe Union High School District, Walt Richardson and Whole Foods Market.
