makes lactation cookies to support nursing moms in their efforts to provide an abundant supply of breast milk to their babies as well as a healthy snack for the whole family, is very excited to introduce Moms That Move - a campaign designed to help parents set and meet goals for physical activity and healthy living.
Moms That Move (www.milkmakers.com/momsthatmove) is the idea of Emily Kane, founder and owner of milkmakers and mother of three young children. The challenge, which Kane has experienced personally, is to encourage new parents to get active again when it seems overwhelming to find the time and motivation to do so. By setting small, achievable goals, parents can take baby steps and start creating habits in activity and eating choices that lead to healthier lifestyles, making parents good role models for their children. Kane also discusses the Moms That Move campaign in a video on YouTube.
"New moms aren't usually feeling at their best," says Kane. "I certainly wasn't after each of my kids was born. I was sleep deprived, my clothes didn't really fit, and I could barely find time to eat let alone eat right. It's so easy to put off taking care of yourself and say you're too busy or life is too chaotic. But getting moving again, in small easy steps, is one of the best ways to start feeling like yourself again and set a great example for your entire family."
milkmakers will kick off the Moms That Move campaign with a live question-and-answer session on January 19, 9-10am Pacific Time, on the milkmakers Facebook page
(www.facebook.com/milkmakers). The Q&A will feature lactation consultant Renee Beebe, M.Ed., IBCLC, and nutritionist Ashley Besecker, RD, CD answering posted questions about physical activity while breastfeeding, proper nutrition, and many other topics related to breastfeeding, nutrition, and healthy living. Following the live Q&A, milkmakers will facilitate an on-going, month-long Moms That Move conversation on the Facebook page.
In addition, milkmakers is sponsoring an online contest to help build a community of moms (and dads, too) inspiring each other to get started and be active. milkmakers asks "What are we doing to get moving?", "How are we going to get started?", "Why is being active important?". Parents can enter the contest by answering these questions with photos, video, and/or stories on the milkmakers' Moms That Move site at www.milkmakers.com/momsthatmove through February 28, 2012. The winner will receive gifts worth over $300, including a one-hour consultation with nutritionist Ashley Besecker, RD, CD, an iPod Shuffle, a Fitbug with one-year membership, a subscription to Shape magazine, milkmakers cookies, and more.
"This is about giving yourself permission to take a little bit of time and do something for yourself,

even if it's only for 10 minutes today," says Kane. "Any time spent being active, whether it's 10 minutes or a whole hour, is worthwhile. milkmakers wants to help moms let go of the guilt about taking time for themselves and be inspired to get moving. It doesn't matter what you're doing, as long as you're moving."
Kane created milkmakers cookies when she was looking for a way to increase her own breast milk supply in a convenient, natural, healthy way after her first daughter was born. She began experimenting with different lactation cookie recipes in order to come up with one of her own, which turned out to be the best oatmeal chocolate chip cookie she'd ever had. The combination of oats, brewer's yeast and flax seed helped with her milk production, making it easier to pump at work during the day and breastfeed when she got home.
milkmakers come in two varieties: oatmeal chocolate chip and dairy-free oatmeal raisin. These all-natural, organic cookies are deliciously decadent and are packed with powerhouse ingredients such as oats, flax seed, and brewer's yeast, giving moms the nutrition they need for an abundant milk supply. milkmakers allow moms to feel like they're indulging their sweet tooth while doing something good for baby too.
And moms can feel good about letting other members of the family share her special treat! The numerous health benefits of flaxseed, oats, and brewers yeast are well documented in a variety of outlets. These benefits include improving digestion and lowering cholesterol, which can be very important in fighting childhood obesity.
milkmakers suggests that moms eat 1 to 2 cookies per day to reap their full benefits. The cookies can be stored in the freezer to maintain freshness; they soften up after just a few minutes of being taken out to thaw. All varieties of milkmakers cookies are available at www.milkmakers.com for $49 for a one-month supply (3 packages of 10 cookies each), or $19.99 for a 10-cookie starter pack.
