Bedford, MA (September 26) - Craving an authentic pastrami on rye, Ruben, or other "New York-style" deli sandwich? Time to check out The Boardroom Bistro, a new café in Bedford that is the unique collaboration of two long-time friends, David Smerling and Jeffrey Goldberg.
From October 17th-21st,The Boardroom Bistro will celebrate its one-year anniversary with a week of specials. Specials will include a soup day, coffee day, bread tasting, buy one/get one free, new menu items, and more.
Initially the brainchild of Goldberg, who grew up in New Jersey and longed for the "Jewish-style delis" of his youth, The Boardroom Bistro reflects the hospitality these business partners enjoy extending to their own friends and family. The Boardroom Bistro serves fresh, high-quality food at moderate prices with menu items such as the "Jersey Joe" (a "triple-decker" of corned beef, pastrami, turkey, and cole slaw with Russian dressing, piled on rye bread) and "the Jake" (turkey on cranberry nut bread imported from Belgium) - both named after family members and friends. The café also offers fresh salads, homemade soups, and locally baked desserts, as well as corporate and residential catering. More than just a "deli" the Boardroom is open for breakfast (full service including waffles and pancakes), lunch, and early dinner and has a full-service bar.
The restaurant's décor exudes warmth with its comfortable bronze booths and chess-themed accents. Customers order at the counter and are handed a giant chess piece for their table, so that wait staff will know where to bring the food. Customers can linger over lunch or a cup of the restaurant's outstanding coffee - made to order from a choice of sixteen different types of beans on a unique, state-of-the-art air infusing French press - and yes, play chess.
Why the chess theme? An aficionado, Goldberg wanted to personalize the restaurant for
himself, and also his customers. "I wanted it to have a memorable, home-like appeal, like eating in someone's library," he explains.
For Smerling, the meaning is much more metaphorical. "Just like chess, running a restaurant requires an incredible amount of strategy, attention to detail, and patience. Patience is king."
The pair's light-hearted banter reveals the deep bond between Goldberg and Smerling. Their unlikely friendship, which formed more than 20 years ago when they and their wives met at Temple Isaiah in Lexington, adds a quirky, eclectic atmosphere to the Boardroom. "He can sing and I can't," says Goldberg, referring to Smerling's musical virtuosity. "He's the older brother I never had; I'm the younger brother he never wanted," adds Smerling.
