My Take on 2008

How's business??? Hardly a day goes by that I'm not posed that question. My answer varies, depending who's asking and my mood at that particular moment. As businesses, both big and small, fall prey to this economy, it seems that most times the question is sincere- especially when it pertains to long-standing, family-owned businesses like ours. Here's my take on 2008:Retail: Store traffic could only be described as sparse. But the people that did come in were buying the good stuff. Warm bronze finishes and clean uncluttered designs were most popular. Also, traditional gas logs, like the Pinehurst triple burner (See Pinehurst Burn) sets sold best. During these trying times, it appears people are leaning toward high quality products that are warm, inviting, homey and comfortable.Residential Construction: Only the very high end had any activity here. Top of the line gas fireplaces by Town & Country did very well, especially in new homes along the Lake Michigan shoreline.Commercial Construction: Our biggest growth came in the installation of gas fireplaces in schools, lobbies and offices throughout the area. Projects included GR Toyota, Design 1 Spa, McKay Tower Lounge, The Fitzgerald, Cornerstone College, Kalamazoo College and seven fireplaces at Calvin College. So, you ask, "How's business?" In a word- challenging. We are very thankful for the opportunity we have had over the past year to work with our loyal customers, including the many architects, designers and contractors who receive this e-letter.
