Observations:

As I get older (56..and a grampa at that!) I have a greater appreciation for the friendships that have developed as a result of these Shows- especially Gary Bowden (NJ) and Steve Pulone (CA).  Each of us are 3rd generation fireplace "survivors", and once a year get a chance to get together and share battle stories. I love these guys and we've had some great times together.

The Annual Fireplace Show in Atlanta just didn't have theblack diamond burner "buzz" that some of the past shows have generated.  Many manufacturers had downsized their booths and the general mood was one of caution.  It's obvious that the rest of the country is now experiencing the slowdown we've been having here in Michigan for the last several years.

Trends of Note

  • Proliferation of "Linear" or "Ribbon" flame gas burners.
  • "Alternative Shapes" to logs expanding.. eg. Glass, stones, shapes   etc.
  • Stainless steel & nickel facings and accessories.    (I requested Oil Rubbed Bronze from all of our suppliers!!)
  • Outdoor Rooms continue to expand- fireplaces, firepits, outdoor kitchens etc
  • "Green" continues to be a sticky issue for our industry.
    • Natural gas has high efficiencies and extremely low emissions, but is non renewable.
    • Wood and pellet are renewable, but tend to have lower efficiencies and higher emissions.

I look forward to following up in future E-Letters on the new products that caught my eye this year.  Two of my favorites are pictured above.
