Happy Thanks

You may remember that Eastmont's October newsletter was supposed to be in two parts. Supposed to be...

It is very ironic that the intro was going to be about my attempts to keep up with technology. It all happened then.

Total Tech Chaos.

First my work computer gave up. Nothing special here, just old age. Replacing it and transferring files and programs was a breeze, mostly because I actually didn't do it myself. Computer Breeze, you chose your business name well. My first thank you goes to you.

It went downhill from then on. My laptop AND my old work computer (which had in the mean time become my NEW home computer) got infected practically at the same time.

My laptop: suddenly unable to open most of the files. Hundreds of pictures, hundreds of word docs both personal and professional. They were all right there, thumbnails in front of me, nagging me, just one click away. Unable to open.

computer crash

I must have tried all the file recovery, file converters, system restore gizmos available this side of the galaxy. The best I was able to do is open just a handful of documents, but all of them looked like they had been typed by someone from the other side of the galaxy: my October newsletter started like this:

p#nêØ"pM¤p"*8*pBp«G¦Á 4ÜÔ5Nä5˜ÿ5kì5A¤r@Àp@ºÁÛÿ

 merde

After trying to solve the issue myself I ended up contacting Microsoft's customer support who were actually quite amazing: first they emailed me various options to remove the bugs. They kept checking with me to see if I was able to solve the problems. I was not. Finally we set up a time for one of their technicians to take remotely control of my computer. It took him close to four hours, but he did it!

I must say I was very impressed by their service, from the first phone call to resolving the issues and their last message thanking ME for being so patient. So my second thank you goes to Suresh who spent last Sunday evening in my computer. Actually it must have been Monday morning for him, judging by his accent.

Anyway, both my laptop and desktop computer seem to be doing well. But I still have to find a way to recover all the corrupted images and files, including all my newsletter drafts. So the second part of my October newsletter is going to be the first part of the December one, because I have to start from scratch.

I actually did, but I realize I have been typing away for quite a while and you're probably already reading someone else's email, or putting the turkey in the oven.

But I have more Thank you before I let you go: with about 5 weeks to go until the end of the year we can already tell that 2010 is going to be Eastmont's best year ever. So heartfelt Welcome and Thank You to all of you who have tried our services for the first time this year, and Thank You to our returning customers for keeping us so busy.

We couldn't have done it without you!

Happy Thanksgiving and remember:

Back up you files!

(I'm still not doing it...)

Iglehart combines the spaciousness of the environment with a sense of light and weather, portraying atmosphere rather than specific depictions of place.

"I would like to create a space that allows the viewer to enter, without the clutter of a lot of information or storyline. A place to be in..."

The Eastmont Art Fund

The Eastmont Art Fund usually sends out an annual invitation to local non profit organizations to become the beneficiary of its annual fundraiser.

This year I felt compelled to bypass this procedure and select Cancer Connection of Florence, in part to honor the wonderful work that this organization has accomplished over the last 10 years and to help Cancer Connection close its Building Campaign that has allowed them to move to their expanded location at 41 Locust St.

But the main reason is of a more personal nature. It seems that in 2010 cancer has affected more than ever close friends or their families as well as my own family.

Each time I learned about a new case I was reminded that it was breast cancer took my mother away when I was just a boy back in 1966, and that my father passed away a few years ago, 40 years after his wife, after a brief and hopeless battle with pancreatic cancer.

It is to them, and to all those who have this year become "connected" with cancer in one way or another that I dedicate this fundraiser.

IMPORTANT:

The exhibition-fundraiser was originally sheduled to start December 11. We have decided to extend the Call to Artists and the application deadline to next year, realizing that this was a very busy time of the year for all of us.

This will allow the artists more time to create/submit work, us to be better prepared for this important fundraiser, and allow all of us to better enjoy this holiday season. The new deadlines and exhibition dates will be announced early next year. Thank you for your understanding.
