Tip of the Month
Viewing Two Documents Side-by-Side
If you want to visually compare two similar Word documents (e.g., to look for changes in formatting or content), you may find it useful to view those documents side by side. Follow these steps.
- Open the two documents you want to compare.
- In Word 2003, from either document, select Window, Compare Side by Side with.
-or- In Word 2007, from either document, on the View tab, in the Window group, click the View Side by Side button.
- If you have only two documents open, the documents display side by side. If you have more than two documents open, a dialog box displays listing all the open documents. Select the one you want to compare and click OK.
- Use the scroll bar in either document to scroll through the documents and look for differences. By default, synchronous scrolling is turned on, meaning both documents scroll simultaneously. If you want to scroll within each document independently, click the Synchronous Scrolling button to deactivate this feature.
- When you are finished comparing documents, click the button on the Compare Side by Side toolbar (in Word 2003) or click the button on the View tab, in the Window group (in Word 2007).
Note that you can also use this tip in Excel 2003 or 2007, to compare two workbooks side by side!
