A Summer Solstice Fable For Your Use

We are looking forward to our Summer Solstice Ritual at GA at the end of this month. I hope many of you can be there. Whether or not you can do that, I know many of you will have Solstice observances at your own churches, and I would like to share with you a resource for your use. Here is a story I wrote some years ago, which I used in our Midsummer service at South Valley UU in Salt Lake City. Please enjoy it in your own chapter or congregation should you like to do so.

Help Wanted

Website Design - CUUPS is looking for a website redesign to create a site that will serve as the primary point of entry for its members and supporters across North America. Experience with CiviCRM and Drupal is necessary - as we are moving our membership management to that software, and any Joomla! content management experience is a huge plus. Please provide examples of your past work when you contact us thru the bulletin@cuups.org address.
We intend for the design phase of this project to be complete by the end of this calendar year.

Website Maintainance - The people who have been doing this for the past few years need to focus their energy elsewhere, so we're looking for individuals who would be interested in maintaining a newly designed CUUPS website. This would involve making sure that the front page is frequently updated with new content, and to actively solicit content from a variety of UU Earth-centered sources. Please provide examples of sites that you currently or have recently done this for when you contact us thru the bulletin@cuups.org address.

Greetings!

As the 2009 General Assembly approaches there are two pressing issues on the minds of CUUPS Board Trustees and most of the members we talk to: The UUA Presidential Election, and the vote on 1st year approval for the revision of the UUA Principles and Purposes.

The UUA Presidential Election: The CUUPS Board has decided not to make a recommendation in this race. However, it is not because of our disinterest. Both Rev. Laurel Hallman and Rev. Peter Morales have passionate supporters inside and out of the Earth-centered UU community. First, CUUPS has never made an endorsement in a UUA Presidential race. Some other former IA's have. The UU Womens Federation came out in favor of Rev. Peter Morales. The UU Women in Religion has endorsed Rev. Laurel Hallman. Rev. Morales's church is home to one of the largest and most successful CUUPS Chapters in the country. Some of the chapter members are actively involved in his campaign at high levels. On the otherhand, one of the most outspoken and eloquent advocates for Rev. Hallman's campaign is the Rev. Shirely Ranck - the author of "Cake for the Queen of Heaven" without whom, CUUPS may very well may never have come about. While there is no "slam dunk" answer here - information to reach that answer is easily accessible. Go to uua.org and follow the links to the Presidential Election webpages. There are recordings of several of the candidate forums that have been held across the country. Reach your own considred decision and make sure that your congregation votes all its ballots - they can be mailed in when your UU church sends few people than they have votes at General Assembly.

The Principles and Purposes Revision: No one on our board is pleased with the Sources section of the revised Principles and Purposes that will go before the delegates this year. If it were a simple up or down vote - the choice would be clear.
However, the process for amending the UUA Bylaws (and the Principles & Purposes are part of those bylaws) is a complicated multi-phase process. This holds the possibility that the proposed revision could be amended next year into some that is as good, or even better than the status quo. It also holds the possibility that any mention of Earth-centered spirituality could be removed.
Unless the unexpected happens and this revision fails to receive even 50% support from the assembled delegates, one of the things we will try to do at General Assembly is work with our allies in the other former Independent Affiliates to craft an amendment to the Source revision for introduction at the 2010 GA. If you are at General Assmebly, you are welcome to help us in this. We will have information about this at our booth (#528) - which we are sharing again this year with UUs for Jewish Awareness.

So, whose fault is this, anyway? While griping about UU leadership may be one of the few pasttimes that everyone can afford these days; our gods and goddesses, or high selves, generally expect better of us. Anyway, there's more than enough blame to go around. For those of you who have been following the discussions on the CUUPSters yahoogroup, you've seen folks discussing how much difficulty CUUPS national has in responding to its members. And some of this has been over what should be really simple things, like membership and chapter applications. For those of you who have been with us from the early days - this is NOT a new subject. This is a topic that CUUPS has had problems with from nearly the very beginning. When the treasurer is in North Carolina, the membership coordinator is in New England and the Secretary is in California and everyone is sending paper documents via USPS, nothing gets done quickly. So anyway, later this summer we'll be moving forward and joining the 1990's by moving the entire member renewal process to the Internet. While that's not an exciting Pagan revelation - but it should make your life a little easier, or at least it will ours.
But back to the blame thing, we, on the CUUPS Board, are taking a look at what we do well, and what we don't. In cases, where we don't do stuff well - we're going to try to find people who can ... for free. (Why Free? Check out the Treasurer's report in the left column.) So, we're going to be asking for some people with specific skills. If the description is for someone just like you, we *really* need your help!

Good News - Archives Available. I do have one piece of unambiguously good news. Many of you have requested archive copies of the CUUPS Bulletin because your old emails got deleted, or you weren't subscribed from the very beginning, or you want to print off copies for prisoners who don't have access to the internet. We now have archive capability thru Constant Contact and are in the process of putting together the archive page this week.
The should be link to it on the CUUPS webpage within the next week.

An Oops.  In the Notice of Annual Meeting that was mailed out to current CUUPS members a few weeks ago, we misstated which congregation South Valley CUUPS belong to. They are part of South Valley UU Society, NOT 1st Unitarian of SLC as stated on the flyer. Our apologies to any confusion this may have caused.

Welcome to the ninth issue of the CUUPS Bulletin where Aisling shares a Summer Solstice fable, we look at our plans for General Assembly, and our evolving positions on a couple of the hotter issues. Then we ask for your help on a couple of things that we think you can do better than we can.

To send something to the CUUPS Bulletin, just email bulletin@cuups.org

For the next issue, we will let you know what happened at GA.  Any ideas for articles that could accompany the GA happenings should go to the Bulletin email address listed above.

ICUUW The First International Convocation of Unitarian Universalist Women

How can I even begin to convey the amazing experience of being with over 550 UU women (and men) from all over the globe in attendance in Houston, TX the weekend of February 26-March 1, 2009 for our first ever international gathering? The theme of the conference was "Weaving Global Partnerships to Enrich Women's Lives". The ICUUW Steering Committee aided by the South West UU Women's Group (SWUUW) spent over four years planning the event.

After the first auction (which was a vigorous success as a fundraiser for the community), we made some additions/changes to the format to better reflect the eclectic tastes of our community:

The four day conference dedicated a day to each element during our Worship times. Thursday was Earth, Friday was Air, Saturday was Fire and Sunday was Water. The four beautiful quilts depicting the elements hanging in the main ballroom for the duration of the conference were later raffled off. There was so much chanting and singing. Some of the workshop presenters included Margot Adler, Carolyn McDade and Emma's Revolution.

During the gathering we broke into small groups called Global Sisters groups where we came up with not only the issues which we felt were important to be working on, but also some action plans to be implemented around those issues. The top three issues we decided to focus on are Education, Health Care, and Violence against Women.

There is so much more to say about the gathering. There is a website to visit (icuuw.com) where you can find out more information about what we did and what we will continue to be doing. I would also like to add that I have been inspired to plan a St. Lawrence District Women's Conference for May 2010. If any of you are in the district and would like to help in the planning please contact me at jfb523@gmail.com.

Four Winds Sum. Solstice
Solstice Celebrations All Around!

Looking around the web for announcements of Solstice Celebrations at CUUPS chapters we find:
Denton, TX - an Egyptian themed ceremony dedicated to Ra, Isis, and other members of the Egyptian pantheon. Our ritual is a modern adaptation of ancient Egyptian practices, drawn from the Pyramid Texts, the Book of the Dead, and other sacred writings. This service will be conducted twice - once on June 23rd at their home congregation, then on June 27th - they'll be featured as one of the main ritual groups at North Texas Summer SolstiCelebration held in Dallas.
Fort Myers, FL will hold their Summer Solstice on Wed. June 17. It is a time to celebrate the beauty of the flourishing earth and to appreciate all that is special in your life.
Also in Florida, Moonpath CUUPS at Fort Lauderdale will have a ceremony on Saturday June 20th that promises drumming, dancing, chanting and feasting.
CUUPS at the UU Church of Indianapolis will hold their Solstice Service on June 25th.
In Minneapolis, MN Twin Cities CUUPS will hold their Solstice service on June 20th at Kenwood Park. We will be working with the Sun and the element of Fire on the longest day of the year to purify ourselves of ideas and other things in our lives that no longer serve us.
At May Memorial UU Society in Syracuse, NY, Jody Brown and the church's CUUPS chapter will conduct a Choloclate Ritual for the congregations Sunday worship service on June 21st.
CUUPS at the UU Church of Midland (MI) will hold a potluck at 6pm on June 20th to be followed by their Solstice Ceremony.
Last but not least, Rainbow Chalice CUUPS will conduct a Summer Solstice Ritual for the people at General Assembly. It will be at noon on June 27th at the Salt Palace Grounds in Salt Lake City, UT.
Celebration! 20 Years of Environmental Ministry

UU Ministry For Earth is going to throw a party for it's 20th Birthday!

Come join us for the General Assembly celebration!

Back in 1989, all of the organizers for the Seventh Principle Project  - the organization that's now called "the Ministry for Earth" - were active CUUPS members....   The "Green Sanctuary" program, in its first edition, was prepared by CUUPS people and it circulated among CUUPS groups and in other places.

Blessed be,
